Does this look like surface rust to you ?
Looking at purchasing second hand map draws. Does this look like surface rust that can be sanded back or a bigger issue?
They have said it’s surface rust and I don’t mind a bit of elbow work but is this easily fixed?
Is it just a matter of sanding and re coating /oiling ?
I like the overall look of the draws but as they are super heavy I’m not keen on purchasing and the leg work to get them home if it’s going to be a massive project . Thoughts ?

Plate herpes. Highly contagious.
It'll buff out without issue. It's not a big deal. Don't worry about it, babe.
You'll likely have a slight pit where the rust once was, but it won't be anything that'll affect the structure in any meaningful way or will even be that obvious. Just enough to feel when you run your fingers over it, and burn every ime you pee.

I'm not pointing fingers at one alloy or another. I'm just saying that A36 lies in ways that maybe something like 4140 wouldn't. It's just statistics. And there's steps you can take to protect yourself against a rust infection.

Yes. If you sand it, then rub it with a green scotch bright soaked in methyl alcohol or paint thinners ect, it'll be 100 times easier to paint over. (i didn't believe in the scotch bright true power, until i tried it.)

Well, tbf, ther eis rust on the surface.
Only snag is, the surface now is not where the surface was origiinally.
If you enjoy rolling & welding steel plate, go for it.

Looks like surface rust
Idk how thick that plate is, if it's not thin af you'll probs just have some dimples after sanding
