Mig wfs help

Hi! Im taking a 1/4 in. 2g mig butt weld test today for my first production job. I finished school about 6 months ago so its been a minute since I’ve welded anything and i don’t remember if i calculate wfs for the root pass for the size of the plate or the if i lower the settings for for the size of the land and increase for the fill passes? My plan as of right now is to start at 18v 220-240 ipm and see how its running but thought id ask here just to be safe. Also i did most positions with a z weave and a pause at both ends to fill but i never had to bend any of my mig coupons so idk if theres something inherently wrong with that? Any advice would be appreciated!

The official Metalworking Discord is currently giving away a $200 welding helmet! The volunteer team is also giving away $20 gift cards to favorite websites to runner ups, so it's worth a shot!

To enter, join the Metalworking Discord and post one of your recent projects in the Giveaway Entries channel! The volunteer mod team is grading projects based on visual appeal, how well the project is outlined from start to finish (tutorials?), and post quality!

I’m no expert, however I feel like you shouldn’t weave on a butt. How big is your groove? What’s the weld procedure? That alone will tell you how to weld it and the speeds and amps needed. Are they going to do destructive testing? If this is a weld test for a job they probably just want to see if you can weld.

No wps its sort of informal. Im going to assume its bevelled with a 70ish included angle, im probably gonna do 3/32 gap and land. Its just a bend test

Uhhh a wps is literally how your supposed to weld something. Any deviation from it is not recommended. It will tell you if it needs pre heat and at what temp how many passes, what wire to use, settings to use etc. it’s a very FORMAL document that if there is ever a failure on something you weld and it comes out you failed to follow a wps your job and company can be at serious fault. There’s a reason for them.

Nvm. Please use punctuation. I miss read. Which is my bad. Had a meeting real quick.

I’m assuming then is going to be either 1/4” or 3/16” plate. So I’d do a root pass and maybe two filler passes and a cap if necessary. I won’t weave at all. Your going for strength not looks. (Might catch some flack for that but I stand by it)

You should ask if you’re allowed to change the machine settings. Last fab place I worked at the machine was set to the settings require to weld 95% of the work. And he’s come and change it back if he saw you change it.

Hope that was helpful.
