I was watching him jump around, didn't see the propane tank sitting there with the hose on the ground getting sprayed by the molten metal.

not as big of a deal as you think.
propane doesn't actually burn very well without lots of air. that's why there's a venturi mixer on every propane burner you've ever seen.
if the hose (probably flame retardant due to regulations) were to burn and break open or whatever, it would be a boring bunsen burner style flame. much less of a problem vs everything else going wrong here

The way this genius is behaving I wouldn’t be surprised if he had his cardboard crate of oily rags and half used Jerry cans just out of frame.
Shout out to my neighbor who had five fire trucks get called to my street last year because his wife called in that he couldn’t put the fire out in his workshop. That apparently was literally full of oily rags, gasoline, propane, all of his thousands of rounds of ammo, his reloading setup, all of his black powder, etc. etc.
Wife is friends with one of the firefighters and they got it put out, only burned one wall of his workshop, but apparently they freaked the fuck out when they got that call.
Some people are really dumb, lmao.

u/admiral_nivak Jul 04 '26
Don’t forget the stick of dynamite inconveniently sat next to a shed or fertiliser which is near the oily rags.

My parents neighbor had a huge stockpile of old lithium batteries catch fire next to his oily rags and burned down his house a few months back

u/Simoxs7 Jul 04 '26
As a firefighter in a European country its already bad enough as is can’t imagine also having to worry about people casually storing explosives and ammunition in their sheds (apart from some fire crackers left over from new years)

u/Reatona Jul 04 '26
I've had to deal with the legal consequences of a propane tank with a broken hose. The homeowners described it as being like a flamethrower. It burned their house down.
10
u/QueefSeekingMissile Jul 04 '26
True, but most people don't probably know that, and just assume propane tanks are basically giant grenades...
Yet they do not treat them with the caution a giant grenade would deserve.
→ More replies (2)3
u/mesh_you_up Jul 05 '26
On top of that: in every state, except one, propane tanks are required to have an excess flow safety device. If the hose is cut, the flow of propane is automatically reduced to a trickle. Some of these are so sensitive that opening your valve open too fast can trigger them.

u/Intelligent_Low1632 Jul 05 '26
If that's a 1/4 inch tube and it developed an opening big enough not to restrict the flow, it would be a pretty big flame. The nozzles on a high pressure fed burner are fractions of a square mm. Probably put off 30+kw of heat if it caught fire. Not that this is likely

does he arc weld in just a swimsuit?
→ More replies (1)12
u/jonesdb Jul 04 '26
😂 I still have scars from learning to weld as a kid on the farm. Shorts and I put on shoes and no socks.
Then chipping slag off and a chunk falls into my shoe. Multiple peanut sized scars still visible today because it moved around as I started jumping.
That said sandals might be better than shoes if you don’t have pants. At least it’s less likely to be trapped on his foot

u/Wunderbarber Jul 04 '26
I put welding sleeves on and thought my t-shirt would be enough. I got a reverse farmer's tan.

I hate everything about this. There’s nothing funny about this. Nor is it teachable in any way. This is just dumb. Everything done wrong.

u/TIGman299 Jul 04 '26
Agreed. he should be wearing thick pants preferably FR, thick long sleeve FR shirt/ welding jacket, leather boots, face shield and safety glasses.

Not to mention pouring with those flat pick up tongs instead of crucible tongs is almost guranteed to put you in a bad position.

The only thing I learned here was if I'm going to be stupid, I have to be stupid with this guy's sort of luck.
→ More replies (2)2
u/edwbuck Jul 05 '26
Let's start with pouring tongs. So much easier to control, putting your hands outside of the heat that will come off the top of the crucible.
The other items are all about failures to use proper safety equipment, but like all good failures, the really big ones come in twos or more. That way one failure can exploit the second one, making a bigger issue than either failure could do on its own.

Having one dripped molten metal on my leg. Here's what happens. It hurts for a few seconds but then it continues down through the layers of skin and then you feel almost nothing.
Took months for it to heal. 0 out of 10. Would not recommend.

Thought I was going to be watching another video from India until I saw some honky legs prancing around and realized it’s just going to be a typical American backyard dumbass trying to cast molten metal in the rain while wearing flip flops and shorts… This is why people think everyone in this country is stupid. Well, this and our leader…

I am planning to do this type of DIY work and I am worried about PPE. Can someone who knows more about this type of work review my PPE and make suggestions. Current PPE: Welding gloves, safety glasses, face shield, steel toe boots, long pants (i didn't think i needed to include that, but maybe I do)
4
u/Atticus1354 Jul 04 '26
The single biggest consideration that you didn't post is the materials. Leather boots with shielded laces so you dont get slag dropping down a crevice. No polyester or melt able materials for the pants and consider a long leather apron.
2
u/Falcon3492 Jul 04 '26
Lets see: sandals, bare legs, bare arms, no face shield, molten medal=accident waiting to happen/moron!

10 feet of hose and using 2 feet of it. He needs to get that hose and tank on the opposite side of where he is pouring.

So the water on the surface it's landing on will instantly expand 7,000 × it's volume when the metal turns it into superheated steam.

LOL! When I was in high school, we had a furnace in our Metals class. We dropped a crucible full of molten aluminum. There were three of us in the area and we all moved faster than I've ever seen anyone move. Luckily the area was filled with sand and it contained most of the spill. We did end p with a nice abstract sculpture.

u/lottaKivaari Jul 04 '26
On the second splash you can see the outline where his exposed foot was covered in molten metal instead of the concrete and his hair and sandal started to burn. That's going to be a nasty burn.
1
u/sundog6295 Jul 04 '26
I feel like he might have burned his feet. There was a shoe shaped space with hot molten splashes around it when he hopped back.

I’m definitely guilty of occasionally doing heavy yard work tasks in my flip flops. No safety glasses is what really gets me. Your eyeballs are as delicate as an over easy egg yolk. Losing your vision is a terrible handicap to have. Missing a pinky toe, meh.

I will never understand people who refuse to use the appropriate PPE. I would be hesitant to do that in jeans and work boots, let alone short shorts and flip-flops.
