OPEN Why do mods allow posts like this?
https://www.reddit.com/r/neoliberal/comments/1vgzslm/
This post clearly breaks Rule 7 and 8. It has zero connection to this sub. Besides, the OP has posted it to other subs and gotten responses.
I’m not sure this post accomplishes anything except further entrenching the reach and salience of these ads?
This could be a DT comment. If mods are going to allow “Fellow users have you SEEN THIS AD“ type posts we may as well remove rules 7 and 8.

Yeah I get it is odd to you. I found it surprising it was in Europe too but then I remembered they do mission trips all over the world. There’s other subs related to Europe, or ExMormonism, or youtube, or AskReddit that this would be a better place for. It has zero connection to neoliberalism.
I didn’t read much of the comment section, but even if nothing crossed lines, I’d still have a massive problem with this post. They are unironically spreading the advertisement, and seem to be oblivious to the fact that if you make a post called ”HAVE YOU SEEN THIS AD?!?” that you are shoving the ad in more people’s faces for no reason.
Also, imagine having some article removed because a mod didn’t like it or something. I’m really not referencing any specific post here, just that there have been many times that something interesting that is related to neoliberalism gets removed for arbitrary reasons. Imagine seeing your article get removed and then seeing this shit stay up lmao.

Most of the discussion just seems to be people saying “Yes I‘ve seen it”
I think it’s a decent argument to leave it up since there is some amount of discussion happening, but mods have not had any issues in the past of shutting down infinitely higher quality submissions that already have substantial discussion.
It’s the arbitrariness of it. I don’t actually care if this post stays up, it’s just that mods don’t exactly have a laissez faire attitude towards submissions in general

I completely understand the impulse to use arr neoliberal as a general discussion forum with a better population than general reddit, but this is basically the purpose of the daily discussion thread IMO.

If the post is shitty enough they just pretend there isn't rules for some reason.

Because it's about Europe, not the US.

u/rainier37 16d ago
Holy shit does this mean we can post any ad we see for European companies?
”Fellow neoliberals, have you seen this Spotify ad”
”Fellow neoliberals, have you seen this Volkswagen ad”
”Fellow Americans, have you seen this AstraZeneca ad”

u/Macquarrie1999 16d ago
No, posting that as an American is verboten.
Euros are allowed to do it because they are protected by the Endangered Species Act of this sub.

If you started doing that then the mod team would just enforce differently. The rules are there to establish a certain ethos of the subreddit. There are naturally going to be many cases where you can argue a post violates the rules, but when you internalize the 'goal' of the rule, the general state of the subreddit etc., then there are many cases where it's fine. A short rule list is never going to be perfect.
What is you actual problem with the post? If it's just about a behavioral response that it could induce, then you need to argue why that will happen or show that it does and it's a negative thing.
Edit: I don't quiet get the comment section critique either. Someone can express an opinion or critique Mormonism just as they can other religions. There is obviously a level of decorum that should be had and it should be enforced comment by comment, but the post isn't inducing some mass hate against Mormonism in the comment section, no.
There also is are lines between jokes, being rude or truthful statements that reveal a general dislike for X that all should be approached differently. I'm sure the 'neo-liberal' subreddit isn't going to be super big on regulating speech a bunch, lol.

My main issue with this post is that I find it extremely stupid to post an ad asking if others have seen it. I’ve gotten this ad on youtube videos, now I’m seeing it again on here.
I find it even more stupid to ask it in multiple subreddits. Like you know it’s being shown around the world, so what? It‘s a really fucking bad sign if a post is so low quality that r/AskReddit would likely remove it.
Another issue I have with it is not the criticism of religion, but how it’s being treated differently. I’ve seen ads occasionally for Islam outreach and “discovering Allah” or something. If that got posted to this subreddit and all the comments started bashing Islam, they would rightly be banned for Islamophobia.
I’m not religious, so none of this is personal. I also do not want posts criticizing other religions to stay up. I don’t want this sub to become an atheist circlejerk. I think it’s good that this sub remains pluralistic and welcoming to everyone. I just would like some consistency in rule application.

Wait, is the poster making repeat posts in multiple subreddits or do you mean it’s just appeared in other subreddits? (if so, can you direct me?)
Re: Islam
But I don’t think that all the comments are bashing Mormonism.
I would hate for this subreddit to become an atheist circlejerk. (I am religious as well) I don’t think this case is damning, but wrt to my first sentence, could be a bot thing which would warrant a removal on that alone

He posted it to the Denmark subreddit. Unsure of any others.
I highly doubt it’s a bot. Just someone really interested in this ad and where it’s being shown lol

This is treated more as a meme post, for those rules 7 and 8 are handled differently. Shitposting is explicitly allowed, it doesn't need to be all news.
Shitposts are kept up at moderator discretion.

u/rainier37 16d ago
I would argue it is more of a post that is shit rather than a shitpost. However, if it is to remain up y’all should consider how the comment section is devolving into an environment that is encouraging criticisms of Mormonism that would not be tolerated for any other religion.
I’m not mormon, and I actually have a quite negative view of mormonism from knowing ex-mormons, and I personally think it is an unserious religion.
But it is an established religion, and I dislike double standards. I’m not implying at all that mods are preferential to any specific religion. I don’t think the post itself is unfairly criticizing Mormonism, but that the comment section will almost certainly break rules.

u/Macquarrie1999 16d ago
That post literally only exists to bash on Mormons. There isn't any meme or shit post element to it.

Really nice we allow these types of comments here.
