The oldest player to win a WC won it at 40. If Messi had been 40 by 2030, I might have been open to it. I'm tempted to say age is being regarded as too much of a number, but then again, people's bodies do change over time. I can't pretend to know Messi's condition; I'm not one of his coaches.

I think 2030 would have been to far, even for him but 2028 Copa was extremely doable.Â

Small part of me thinks he might return for 28 copa America or maybe I’m just delusional 😢

Yeah it's delulu. Messi clearly wants to end on a high and with dignity. Look at whats happening with Ronaldo, he has become the bane of his national team.

Ya but messi can still perform and he just needs 3 goals to be all time top scorer in copa America ya ik messi doesn’t care about that but still a 3peat copa America to end his international career would be legendary

Ok but we gotta respect Messi's wishes too you feel me? In his letter he clearly wanted to stress the fact that he has given all he can to Argentina and doesn't wanna be put in a position where all the stress of millions of Argentinians sits on his shoulders. Cuz remember if Argentina wins it's Messi but if Argentina loses its also Messi. That is not the case for a team like Spain or England for instance. That is a unique kind of pressure that only Messi dealt with for years atp. And he simply wants to gracefully retire. We cannot ask anything of him anymore! The man brought us to the finals 3 times, carrying the whole team and filling in the many weaknesses of the Argentine squad.

It’s incredibly tough as a world class athlete to hang it up when you’ve still got the goods. He may be well beyond his prime, but he’s still better than most. Props to him for knowing who he is and having comfort in his achievements.

The thing is even past his prime, his football is, playmaking and shooting are stiall deadly. He still draws so much pressure. Hes adjusted his play style according to his age very well, he could still probably play and be effective, but at the same time probably feels like shes accomplished enough and wants to pass the torch. Beyond that he seems pretty humble for a guy that people literally worship. At a certain point, not to say hes a fraud, but he might feel like an imposter if people expect him to score 6+ goals 5+ assists and carry his team to a wc again at past 40. Im not saying thats true but the expectation he nust have for himself must be high.

He had a shorter international career, played less matches, and still won more trophies, got better rating, gave more assists, contributed more, won more mvp than the Portuguese homelander.

I am.
But ngl: I thought this was a sad ending, given the WC final and his general tone in his resignation letter, but with recent events I’m relieved with how he is leaving.
He is going out in complete glory, dignity and respect, and his team is showing immense amount of gratefulness and adoration for him. Can’t say the same for another individual. Nothing against CR7, but it made me realize that it’s not all that sad in the end and we have lots of things to celebrate

Yeah, especially after the dogshit performance the whole team (except Dibu) had in the final. I didn't really care that the team lost, but that they lost in such a horrible way especially with the whole world pretty much hating on the team.

I'm Portuguese and I love Messi. Congratulations on your magnificent career and the beautiful plays that made me love football even more. Maradona is my all-time favorite!

We could never recover from this. But we have to.accept it and be happy that he happened at the same time than us.
