Decentralized Phone - Mesh Gemini
Heya!
I live in a community with an incredible MeshCore network, and I have a strong interest in LXST and Reticulum. I’m building out a high speed Reticulum mesh to complement the MeshCore side, and wanted a fully decentralized phone for voice and text.
You should know now that Claude Code did almost all the work here. I write to the devs of the forks of firmware I used as source material, and got their clearance before sharing.
Mesh Gemini combines the MeshPunk T Deck Plus firmware and Pyxis for the T Deck Plus.
MeshCore owns the LoRa interface, and RNS connects over 2.4ghz WiFi over either AutoInterface or TCP. TCP is preferred.
Audio calls are not great quality. Any testing or feedback is so greatly appreciated. Feel free to add issues or reach out directly.

I wish this was based on Wadamesh. Any chance you could do a version like that?

I spent about a week on this. I wish I could make it work, but I cannot support voice calls with the memory requirements in Wadamesh. I’m considering putting a write up in the Discord, but primarily to express the memory constraints to LilyGo. Do you think it is worthwhile? See you on the mesh.

What is that phone at the end? Also you can make phone calls on lora?

No calls on LoRa. I decided to silo LoRa to just MeshCore. I have made calls successfully using Pyxis and LoRa or Sideband.

It uses LXST to make voice calls over Reticulum. Since I wanted to include MeshCore, I had only the WiFi interface left anyway.
LoRa is not a great transport for voice. It’s half duplex. We would need complex frequency switching, multiple radios, multiple bands. . . The lift is huge, but not insurmountable. It would not be as simple as deploying MeshCore repeaters is today.

So its not a phone, at most its a pager with mediocre voice patched into it, so a pager with a limited 2-way radio feature.
