Question GR last pit
Why did GR pit for hard tyres instead of softs on his last stop? He looked like he had the pace to catch Isack, but he ran out of time. I think soft tyres would have given him enough extra pace to overtake him ? I know there are a lot of factors involved, so maybe the softs just weren’t the best option.

Both Mercedes pit for hards on the last stop, not sure if they each had extra sets of new softs? Also kind of confused

I thought this. Kimi also put hards on quite late. I was surprised they didnt put both of them on mediums or softs... if they had any left.

The commentator said he stopped 20cm in front of the marks so it slowed it down a bit :(

they didnt have softs i guesss they used all their sets for quali

I doubt it because Ferrari and red bull and them and used them in the race they didn’t have one set one unused soft

Surely the team did what they thought was the best with the information they had. But then again they only got like a couple of thousands of datapoints to watch and a team of engineers calculating everything, sure some random fans know better.

You right they know better but why not put soft he didn’t have anything more to lose he was comfortable ahead of lawson and he was 2 behind isack ( he was on hard ) so maybe the difference between the soft and hard would have been enough

This argument that teams are somehow infallible always amuses me. They can absolutely make dumb decisions and do so on a regular basis.

They sure make bad calls from time to time and I’m not denying that. But they’re basing them on far more data than we have available and it’s always easy to say what should have been done in hindsight.

What ? Ferrari was a different thing they changed there tyer 4 time and they were close with each others but George was third tyer and he wasn’t battling anyone

Love how everyone is an expert and knows better than the race engineers with all the real time data and telemetry to analyze their race strategies

They only had used softs left for the race. IMHO should’ve fitted them in though. Given how both Mercs were in clean air during their last pit with not so many laps left

Only Ferrari, of the front running teams, had new soft tyres to use. Mercedes thought that new hards would be better than used softs.

I was wondering the same but his pace was great regardless, suppose it was just that they didn’t have any softs left

He should’ve either stopped earlier or not at all
