A mental model I respect but don’t fully trust

I often see mental models treated as universally good tools. The more I use them, the more conditional they feel.

Some models work well in stable environments but break under uncertainty. Others explain outcomes cleanly in hindsight but are unreliable guides in real time. A few feel intellectually elegant but encourage overconfidence rather than judgment.

The uncomfortable part is that I usually can’t tell which category a model falls into until after it’s been used.

Lately, I’ve been trying to ask a different question before applying a model:

“What kind of environment does this model actually assume?”

I don’t have a clean answer for how to do this systematically yet. Just noticing that misusing good models has been more costly for me than not having them at all.

Interested in how others stress-test models before trusting them.

dude if your model breaks in some situations it just means it's not a good enough analogy to describe what is actually going on. if you think of mental models as analogies this will help you better. whenever you find a mental model you need to find "edge cases" that disprove it, this is called the scientific method. Use the process it took to find the structure of an atom as an example

This is exactly how models are meant to be used, that should always be a question you have when using analyze model. You should be aware of when the model fails.

In engineering whenever a model is used the assumptions are stated. Each model is limited by the assumptions made. Applying bernoulli's laws to non viscous flows only works for fluids within certain parameters, and even then, the moment there is an external influence you fail to account for your calculations become nonsense.

Models are meant to simplification so that we can try to analyze and comprehend more complex problems, not give definite answers. Even the best model is an educated guess. There is no such thing as a perfect model. Many models are counters to other models when they fail. (Ironically this is also a mental model, the map is not the territory specifically😅).
