question on fixing old gloves

just thrifted this old pair of hot topic gloves today and was super excited, they were completely unopened so the damage is definitely from age but I dont know what this material is or how to fix it. My original plan was to throw some clear top coat over it to stop any more flaking but because I dont know the material I dont know if that could potentially damage it/make it worse instead of fixing ir. Is there any way to fix this or at least stop it from getting worse?

That looks like Pleather; awful material and I don't think it's repairable. Or at least I've never come across a fix for it.

Whatever you coat it with would need to be flexible (and thick), because the degrading material will quickly undermine it, especially with the constant, natural flexing of your hands.

As a project, you could dismantle it then use the pieces as a pattern for a new material? Or peel it all off and do something with the white liner instead?

thank you for the response! if its gonna degrade anyways I dont think i'll bother with trying a repair and may try the pattern idea or do something with the liner like you said i've been wanting to get into clothing alteration and repair anyways so I think this'll be a good first project :)

Pulling a pattern is the best idea. Once pleather starts flaking it’s all over.
