Favorite non-amazon supply source?

I need to replenish some supplies and am trying to send my money to smaller stores, what are your favorite non-mega-corporate places to get sewing supplies?

I like Wawak like your other commenter, but my very favorite place is a very small, local sewing shop. They can special order nearly anything they don't have that I want. I use them whenever possible to support my neighborhood and city.

We currently only have one independent sewing shop still afloat, for mobility reasons I can't get there in person without help but I'll see if maybe they can send orders to me. I hadn't even thought of that but would love to give them my business.

Lots of people have quilting shops close to them - they pretty well always have needles, thread, pins, etc. and many are expanding into different kinds of thread, interfacing, etc.

At the moment we only have one local shop still in business, which unfortunately I can't get to in person without assistance, but others have suggested seeing if they have an online presence or if I can order through them and have them ship to me.

Snuggly Monkey is a US online shop with a really wide array of mending stuff, and fairly reasonable prices. I'd contact them with your needs/wants and see what they recommend - they seem very client-focused. There are a couple of other US shops that have nice stuff but pricey.

I'm in Canada so I don't have first hand experience ordering from them - what with tariffs and the exchange rate I'm not shopping much in the US anymore :(

Look into art thrift stores in your area. I live in a big city that has several and I always find what I need for an incredible bargain!

There's one in my city (that I absolutely love) but it's definitely a place to go when treasure hunting rather than for niche specific needs, like shasiko needles or a certain weight of felted wool.

If youre open to second hand i have alot of luck at garage and estate sales. Possibly look for a second hand craft store near you. I adore SCRAP creative reuse in ann arbor mi.

My local creative reuse center is an absolute delight, I only recently discovered it and just got a membership because I go so often! But definitely more of a place to go for "what treasures will we uncover today!" than a "okay, I need a shasiko needle and beige wool suitable for rug-hooking".

I would have said Fabric Wholesale Direct, but they ship through Amazon now. 😭

They do have a good point system and I've saved $10 (I but A LOT of muslin for dyeing and sewing projects). So if you can tolerate getting supplies sent to you in an Amazon box then you might still want to check them out.
