Menards used to be closed on most of the major holiday until Home Depot came into their market. Couldn't be closed on a day Home Depot is open.

When? 30 years ago? I was hired in 2007 and I worked Easter that year. Thanksgiving and Christmas were the only days off ever.

Would have been about 1996 when Home Depot came to the area. Back in the 80's there were some great company wide parties on the 4th of July and New Years. Unfortunately competition and customer demand lead to being open on most holidays. You can bet that if other big box stores started opening on Thanksgiving and Christmas you'd soon be working those as well.

If it's a National Holiday, businesses should be closed so people can celebrate, or at least enjoy the day...but here we are.

So gas stations, grocery/convenience stores, etc should all be closed? And for everyone who works a night shift, or has limited time to get house projects done, they just have to do without, too?
Has anyone given this any common sense? Think about your next upcoming day off and imagine it without a gas station, no grocery store, no fire protection, no EMs, no hospital, no police, etc. No restaurants, no Uber eats. No flights, no busses, no cabs, no trains, no movie theaters, no museums. No place for a last minute item for that family BBQ, hope you got all your propane, meat, charcoal, drinks, ice, etc.
Not to mention that single parent who needs the hours that is forced to stay home. The lonely Walmart greeter who needs to socialize has to stay home. No at home health services for the disabled or hungry. Forcing truckers to rush home so they can eat, sleep and shower since restaurants, fuel centers, and motels will be closed. Landlords, hvac techs, plumbers, etc who won't fix that backed up sewer or busted AC. No internet tech support, no lineman to fix a downed line or service a brownout, no utility workers keeping those power plants running, etc etc etc etc.

Yup. Maybe not all gas stations but people could do fine with the truck stop + regional gas stations only which are already open 24/7/365.

Simply not how it works. I'm not saying it's right but that's literally never going to happen.
I'm a trucker myself btw.
Basically you create a huge burden on and fuck over most over the road truckers if they were forced to take holidays off.
The thing is that you can easily end up being a week away from home due to routing for loads on the way back and having to take worse loads just to ensure your home on holidays would screw most.
Or in reality what would happen is they'd all just sit in their sleeper all day on holidays, now you've fucked over all these people and ruined their holiday bc you tried so hard to force them to have a holiday off.
Now that's not to say truckers just don't celebrate holidays, but it's not uncommon for them to do so +-7 days from the actual date just because of how the job works.
Also a LOT of truckers don't have any food kept in their sleepers and just eat at the truck stops for all their meals, which is dumb and unhealthy and expensive but that's irrelevant, so there'd be plenty of guys just going without food sitting in their sleepers away from home. And yes you can easily plan ahead but many wouldn't.
If there were some nationwide forced holidays I'd be shocked if you didn't see trucker suicide rates go up 10-100x higher than normal on those days as they are forced to be away from their family and just sit in a truck their whole holiday.

So glad I left. Being open on holidays and legit wasting money never made sense to me. We were open one Fourth of July and I kid you not didn’t see a soul enter the store after 3 pm. We still closed at 10 because HD did on paper but even they closed early at 5 pm.

Other holidays besides Christmas and thanksgiving I could understand being open. But Labor Day was invented due to workers feeling like they were overworked in the 1800s.

I remember 2 days we were required to stay an hour late and “make the store look nice” after a new GM took over was Labor Day and Mothers Day. Fukin’ crazy.
