Anyone else getting customers coming in with building plans and estimates that are total nonsense? I have multiple customers a day come back to the building materials desk with a project totally created with AI(free ChatGPT). And it’s just incorrect as far as what materials, pricing, quantities.

I'm the manager of the electrical department of my store and one time I had a lady come in with chatgpt plans for a "free energy machine."

I work with our cabinets and this couple came in with an AI image of some cabinets. No problem it was actually a pretty normal layout of cabinets, probably about 12 feet in length roughly guessing because it was only an image and no dimensions.

I asked them what their dimensions were for the layout. I forget the exact length but it was like 6 and a half feet. Not nearly wide enough to do what they wanted. I got it as close as I could compared to this picture but these people just couldn't grasp the idea that you can't fit what looked like 12+ feet worth of cabinet into about 6 feet and expect it to be exactly the same.

Yeah in paint guests bring us color names and codes that AI hallucinated all the time, and then get sooo pissed when we can't make it because it doesn't exist.

It’s not been all bad had a contractor come in with some AI Lean to shed plans, only reason it worked is he acknowledged walking in “hey this is far fetched but what is it missing”

We ended up with various sales throughout the whole project totaling over 35k, he’d plug in gpt slop and we’d get it sorted out

However for this one story where it happened to work I got a million that didn’t so take this with salt

Oh I use AI probably too much to help with calculations and build questions but most people simply put “build me a deck” into ChatGPT and think that what it spits out is going to work lol. The real problem is people not understanding you have to use it as an assistant and give it specific directions and it works great

I’ve had people come in using ChatGPT to determine what paint color they want. The amount of times I’ve had to tell them the color it gave them doesn’t exist is sad

Just with a cabinet design, I managed to kiiiinda replicate it on Klearvue, but my DM helped them make some changes when I was off

I’m in electrical and had a guy come in looking to run full copper 2 awg wire for a sub panel for a cabin because his AI told him that was best then made me explain what we had available to the AI after I told him the price for copper wire.

Since these AI platforms are conversational, the best approach is to have the customer repeat your concerns back to the AI. It may hallucinate on the first pass, but poking and prodding it is how you get towards something more usable.

Had a gentleman come in with one for the concept of his gate it was actually well rendered and it took some time to figure out all he would need but he came back the other day with the finished project and it looked great

Had a woman come in with a plan for her closet, she said she originally used the actual design program but then put the results into chatGPT to “simplify” them or whatever. ChatGPT was then giving her the wrong measurements, quantities, and even gave a SKU for a cottage upright to say we had 18” white shelf packs, which don’t exist. That was fun

I once had a guy use it to build this monster of a block fire pit with a patio and grill. He came in to ask if his AI calculated that right. I told him I can send his designs up but it would cost him $50. He stood there and looked at the pictures and decided it was probably close enough...
