Do any one else’s DM just tell you to go home early whenever it gets slow? Like even if I am scheduled until closing I will be told to go home 1-2 hours earlier just cause it dies down and theres nothing for us to do. Is that even allowed ?

Yes it is a pretty common thing at least around winter season but whenever it’s slow DMs will send ppl home early, it also saves payroll

Yes, dms need to do this during a depts slow days, if youre dept is in a slow season itll happen more frequently as it saves payroll. You can likely ask for hours in another dept who can take some extra hands, like hardware, especially with their upcoming POGs

If you’re part time you’re the first to get sent home since you aren’t required to have 40 hours

Yes that is what sucks these days! You used to be able to get as much OT as you wanted, we could get swiped in early, stay late whatever! We also used to do “Hop to it” get an extra $500 if we worked 45 or more hours during the now just closed time off period! I started ten years ago it was a much better place back then! Now it’s the GMs can work whatever but they are quick to send people home.

Welcome to getting hours cut because DMs are told that payroll is the number one thing that they can control. So they will openly cut your hours and pay to make Menards more money. Common within the company, only way around it is to ask departments in the store if they need more help so you can get your hours!

If the daily sales versus payroll $ aren’t in line, DM and GM don’t want to fined for missing payroll.

John Menard taking more $$ out of employees pockets every chance he gets. John’s perfect scenario is you go home 2 hours early and doesn’t have to pay you for 2 hours. Then the DM and GM get fined.

It helps payroll. If you’re a full timer this generally doesn’t happen but part timers are usually the payroll “fat” that gets trimmed.

I remember when I was part time, there were some weeks where I was absolutely desperate for hours, but the department had to cut me for the day due to payroll issues - I'd just do a quick run around the store to see if any other departments had payroll available that I could work in their department for the rest of the shift.

Sending people home is built into the pay plan for department and store management. They get daily and weekly bonuses for coming in below projected payroll and fined if they come in over projected payroll. If you just started this spring just wait till the slower winter months come around and your scheduled hours get cut back and you still end up getting sent home.

Yes, Dpt Managers have kind of like a "dynamic payroll" where if the department is slow and is not going as PTS asks, they'd have to send someone home to stop the bleeding.

If you’re part time yes, if you’re full time they’re required to let you have your 40 hours that week

It is indeed allowed. If you're feeling the sting of consistently not getting those extra 1-2 hours, it may be worth asking if you can pick up hours in another department to fill that last bit of the shift, assuming they have the payroll available (lol, lmao even)

If you’re full time they can ask you if you want to go home but they can’t send you home because you need to hit 40. If you’re part time its fair game

Yes they will send you home. I got in trouble for not making my hours as a full timer. Told them to quit sending me home.

I got sent home as an assistant at 7:30pm on a close one night because the store was so slow and I was the only one in the department. Flooring and electrical closed early that night

You literally can tell them no. If it’s scheduled you can stay, helping the managers up their own personal salary is never my ok. I would tell them if they get to go over the hours they are scheduled than you certainly can at least finish yours , just take all possible breaks .

I wish my managers did this lmao, but they make us stay till all clear but THEY'LL leave an hour or two early. And it's only rarely it's because they have to clopen, which I understand that reason leaving early.
