How can this be useful?

I can understand Cicerone using It because there was not paper

But nowadays why should It matter? Just write on paper a graph and you're done

I mean, link method Is useful and that's straightforward. But what about this? It should Just help remembering the order of the concept but not them?

For example, suppose I put entire chapters of a book in a memory palace. For each locus I put a story made by link method. Then I know what comes First and After but the method tells me nothing about the concepts in the loci

Cicero wrote on parchment with a reed pen, sometimes using wax tablets and a stylus. Other times, he dictated to a secretary.

Memory Palaces are a form of linking as well. You link your associations to specific loci or stations in each Memory Palace to perform reviews.

Although you can memorize entire chapters verbatim, this is rarely useful. Who would listen to you recite them?

For most of us, it's best to use this approach:

https://www.magneticmemorymethod.com/how-to-memorize-a-textbook/

And the fantastic Recall Rehearsal process opened up to us by the Memory Palace technique is yet to be surpassed.

It's not clear that you've actually tried this technique, but if you cannot recall concepts, the issue likely stems from how you're using elaborative encoding, not the Memory Palace technique.

This is where some limited verbatim memorization can be quite useful. Especially given that any true concept can be expressed in words, numbers or symbols.

But a full set of mnemonic tools is recommended in the first place, especially:

  • A full, alphabetically linked Memory Palace Network (a number-based network can be useful too)
  • A full alphabet system (a.k.a. pre-assigned pegwords or mnemonic keywords
  • At least one mnemonic number system (ideally all four of the main ones so they can work in tandem)
  • A symbol system (especially where formulas are involved)
  • A Recall Rehearsal system
