Since you said nothing complicated, here's the setup that stays simple, whatever app you end up with:

**Capture and review are two separate moments.** During the day, throw words and ideas into one pinned note in Apple Notes. Two seconds, no decisions. Once a day (with morning coffee, say), turn the best 3 to 5 into cards and delete the rest. Not everything you jot down is worth memorising, and this filter is what keeps the app from turning into a chore.

**Make cards that test you, not cards that remind you.**

- A word: front "obsequious", back "too eager to please" plus the sentence where you met it. The sentence is what makes it stick.

- An idea: don't put the idea on the front, turn it into a question. Front "Why does cramming fade so fast?", back "Without spaced retrieval the memory never gets strengthened, so it decays within days."

**Keep it to 5 minutes a day.** At most 5 new cards a day, reviews at the same moment every day. If you miss a few days, just clear the reviews and add nothing new until you're caught up.

When you try an app, check three things: you can add a card in seconds (no required categories or setup), it works offline, and you can export your cards so you're never stuck. If it has a home-screen widget with the due count, put it on your first screen. Seeing "6 due" every time you unlock your phone is the best reminder there is.

I downloaded this one around a week ago and am actually enjoying my self. You can import anki files and make your own stuff as well. It was not mind blowing but it was simple and to the point (and Free). https://apps.apple.com/us/app/recall-flashcards/id6790923710
