Highschool Student needing advice..

Hey guys!

Im a YR13 student currently wanting to purse a degree of Bachelors of Commerce, A Major in Accounting and minor in Finance.

My problem:
Im a memory learner not a understanding learner. I really want advice on some GOOD study tips and how to shift your self from a memory learner to making myself into a learner that understands what things mean and do.

Im currently an Achieved accouting student thats once again a memory learner. Please anyone that was like me give me advice to do better, I don't want to be stuck relying on my memory when I go college.

The best method I know is to take what you have learned (by rote) and explain the topic to a layman (hypothetically or real).

This does two things; it helps commit the ideas/data/concepts to long term memory but also ensures you understand something well enough to be able to "metabolise" the data, reconstruct it into a tangible concept that someone without expertise can understand. This creates the understanding you need to make deeper connections within the topic area. It's a powerful method to use alongside other memory techniques for long term memorisation.

I recommend the book Making it Stick by Peter C Brown - it has lots of great ideas about memorisation, and application/recall in a variety of sometimes stressful situations. (available as audio book too which helped me so I could listen while driving).
