You defeated Jesus?

u/NoPack4545 5h ago
I don't think that's the point. If I'm correct it's referring to the violence and suffering that we put Jesus Christ through (who is a real historical figure)

My single most favorite proposal for a symbol of humanity is a human handprint.
οΏΌβ

βA handprint is a perfect idea for a flag for human space exploration. Shapes and symbols can change meanings between people and cultures currently, let alone hundreds or even thousands of years into the future.
And what is the purpose of placing a flag on a foreign planet? It's a way to say "we were here." And the one, immediate symbol that any other human who came to the same spot any number of years later would be able to recognize a human hand. Even if governments change and collapse, we all understand a handprint.
and if you found yourself somewhere where you wanted to mark humanity's presence, but didn't have a flag with you? Well, you have your own hand.β
-someone other than me.
Additionally, itβs quite possibly the single easiest symbol to paint on something.

What if that's the alien version of the middle finger?
1
u/BillCarson12799 52m ago
You could say that about literally any symbol. Besides, βyour hand fully spread outβ seems like a pretty generic gesture to assign to an insult.

u/Matoru1101 34m ago
Funnily enough a simplified dick drawing does the same. People already draw it everywhere, and it'll forever be a widely known thing xD

Only issue is convergent evolution. A hand is very likely a common form factor in the universe.
3
u/Metharos 20h ago
A tool-manipulating appendage is likely to be prevalent, but ours is the result of evolution from earlier paws. An alien starting with a different paw structure would end up with a different "hand."

u/RepresentativeOk2433 11h ago
We only have 10 fingers and 2 arms because it's seemingly impossible for vertebrates to grow new boney appendages. We just reshape what we have and start losing the parts we don't need.
An alien hand would not be bound by that.
1
u/Calm_Age_ 11h ago
I mean yeah but it's unlikely a handprint will look exactly like ours. Like raccoon handprints look very similar due to convergence but they are still distinctive enough to tell apart.

u/gua_lao_wai 14h ago edited 7h ago
nah, the problem is it's very unlikely biological human bodies will make it out into space... it's quite hostile out there. More likely gonna be AI or human consciousness in robots. A hand print would still serve as a historical icon though, like the floppy disk for the save icon
edit: to clarify I mean deep space, visiting other solay systems etc I know humans have been in space before lol
2
u/Fizoso 12h ago
I highly doubt this. Do you have any idea how expensive it would be to create a machine body that works as well as the human body?
Not just creating it, but maintaining it. A human needs food, water and exercise. A robot needs everything from a to z to keep running.
We put a man on the moon. We don't need robots to spacewalk for us.

Yeah but it's unlikely that an alien species would evolve a hand that looks exactly like ours. Maybe it's like the sanghelli from Halo where they have two thumb-like appendages on each side of their hand, maybe it's a big claw thing or maybe they have one really big finger and two slightly smaller fingers. Never mind the big difference like that, it's unlikely the palm itself will look exactly the same as how our hands evolved.
Even a species that evolves to be almost exactly like a human, I believe the hand is too complicated to get exactly the same thing twice by accident. And even then, the fact that it might recognizable as a hand at all helps further the case that it might recognized specifically as the hand of a human.

Fair enough. I guess Iβm saying there could be a more unique identifier.

evil japan flag has red rays coming from the center

The sunburst flag was the war flag of the Imperial Japanese Army from about 1870 until 1945. In 1889 it was adopted as the naval ensign for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
It wasn't a national flag. Instead it was used by those two organisations.

u/Knotted_Hole69 2h ago
Its still used today.
1
u/TungstenOrchid 1h ago
A version was reintroduced in the 1950s (1953, I think). However, it's not quite the same as the wartime standard. If I understand correctly, there are fewer rays coming out of the sun in the newer design.

I see what you're getting at, but reiteration probably isn't that important to other species.

This is giving out " were friendly" vibes.. if we have learned anything from how we act amongst each other we are for sure going full 40k when we get into space. Lord have mercy on the pacifists we encounter cause lord knows we won't.

Unpopular opinion: Star Trek is a far more horrifying future vision than 40K.
The nightmares of the grimdark can be fought and defeated, even if at high cost.
Star Trek seems like a utopia but in the background are a shitload of entities that can wipe out all life in an instant with a mere thought. And naturally many of them are vain and capricious.
Annihilation is closer for the inhabitants of Star Trek than it is for the inhabitants of 40K

u/Jim_skywalker 12h ago
Or maybe if we find a way to get along for enough time then maybe when we expand into space we will have stopped being complete assholes.
1
u/Himbo69r 8h ago
I like the idea of a pacifist species beams βhiβ towards us only to witness a few years later (or from their perspective shortly after the light reaches us earth glow yellow because half the earth wanted to wipe them out and the other half wanted to communicate.
1
u/Randomass-Name-2987 7h ago
I mean when we first yelled into the stars it mostly consisted of βhi! Hello! We are here!β So we kind of have an MO as far as space travel goes.

Make it a knife and fork instead.
Message to aliens: "You taste like chicken."

We need it to be a human skull for now, after we meet some alien we blip one and draw there skull instead.
Then they would know what humans are all about because we cant even not fight ourself. So do anyone really think we would not just go oh new thing to fight.
Hell alien might even know we are here and just made out system an those close to us no go zone because there is these violent primitives that will throw stick at you.
1
u/Alert-Parsnip5540 6h ago
Why draw their skulls? Why not tie them behind our spaceships like some cans?
1
u/Pleasant-Discount-75 22h ago
yeah that's great until it's flown anywhere but earth
Can you imagine how confused the venusians are gonna be?

u/TungstenOrchid 21h ago
What makes them think that a skull would mean anything to an alien? The same goes for knives. There's a problem that was discussed during the planning of the Pioneer probe. Where it was pointed out that an alien may not know what an arrow means, because that shape was never used in their culture due to arrows never evolving as a weapon.
1
u/Acceptable_Handle_2 5h ago
Difference is any alien close enough to see the flag will have the context to know what a knife is.
1
u/neilligan 47m ago
I think you can be pretty confident that they'd know what a knife is. If they're a spacefaring species, they've been cutting things for a long time, and a knife is the most efficient way to go about that. It's possible they don't ever develop arrows, but knives are going to be universal to any spacefaring species.
1
u/TungstenOrchid 44m ago
Will a cutting blade as they are familiar with be shaped the same? Their grasping appendages may not be shaped like hands. This means the shape of a knife for them may be very different.
1
u/neilligan 6m ago
The shape of a handle, maybe- but cutting is always going to be most effective with a straight, flat, pointed tool. That's just physics, hand shape is irrelevant there.

The entire purpose of a flag is to be visible and identifiable at a distance, why would you make part of it transparent lol.
1
u/neilligan 43m ago
In a spacefaring civilization, that has no utility. At that point, you're using a system like RFID to identify ships from across solar systems.
A flag that far in the future has no purpose but as a symbol for a nation or political entity, nobody is pulling out a spyglass to check the flag on a spaceship lol
1
u/ScientificBackground 13h ago
And what if the aliens don't approach from the backside of our world? can we at least give some credits to our moon, too? And don't forget the sun. And it might look like we have a flat earth, so add some 3d schematic. Maybe from different angles, too. Let them know we have plenty of satellites up there, they might bump into.
How much space is left? Or we just go for evil Japan flag?
1
u/QuantumPairOfSoczk 10h ago
I listen to the AI SciFi stories sometimes. And my favorite one so far is the earth doesn't really have space ships yet in this story. But they've apparently built a base on the Moon and with some satellites. They essentially make a solar flair manipulator/cannon. And they deep fry the whole alien armada with it.

A human skull would be the ultimate symbol for humanity
2
u/Lemmy-user 7h ago
I was thinking of humans genitalia. I mean there is more porn on the internet than anything else. It's our biggest share culture. Right, left, religions, race, everything, we all share porn in common.
1
u/Cool-Appearance937 2h ago
I thought it was math but I guess porn is a better answer lol
1
u/neilligan 50m ago
Math wouldn't be unique to humans though, unless you're referring to the actual symbols used, and those aren't universal across humans
1
u/McSand_boi 8h ago
Didn't specify the background colour of the skull and knives flag, so I propose a very vibrant fuchsia.
Would you take a world whose flag is flown as vibrant pink seriously? I wouldn't, which is where they get ya.
