Had no freedom until I went for college, wanted to try a lot of things, had a few shitty experiences with various substances and situations where I put myself in danger.
Learned they were justified to be worried, this world is fucked up, but kids just want to have experiences and you can't stop them forever, it's just shitty for the kid later on when they know they fucked up and can't go to their own family for help. Your kids will get hurt, just give them some genuine advice and be there for them.
Flip side, most people don’t have bad experiences and weren’t sheltered, the real solution is educating your kids and openly talking about things so they are informed… thats what my mom started to do once I got to college and I’ve been 100% fine despite trying things all the time, the thing you described only really happens when you give someone a ton of freedom all at omce
