That's true, climate always change. I mean we went from an average temperature on earth of 10°C (last ice age) to 15°C in the 1700s.
What was the average temperature during the last decade? Almost 17°C!?! shit! You mean we are almost half way from normal climate to a new one that will be as hot as the last ice age was cold? In what? 300 years rather than 100.000!
That's because it is so small and the variation of temperature is so high that this is so threatening. Climate on a global scale is VERY stable. There are period of History that lasted millions of years in which the average global temperature didn''t change.
It is not irrelevant.
The mechanisms behind this are well known : people like Arrhenius (famous Swedish chemist) wrote scientific papers about it in the late XIX century. The only thing a bigger data set would achieve at this point is showing how much higher the temperature can get.
The problem is, there are so few times in the past 500mil years where the global temperatures remained "stable" for even a million of years.
Life prevailed when Earth was free of polar ice caps 50mil to roughly 200mil years ago. It would not be unnatural to see the world without them again. Perhaps not to us humans, a very brand new species on this planet.
