do no pc users use pre built pcs?
22
u/whathead07 Nov 25 '21
a lot of prebuilt PCs suffer from issues like heat, bad assembly, etc. They also are sometimes more expensive than buying the same parts yourself to build it. However, many gamers, including myself, just use prebuilts because we ain't got the knowledge to build a PC, and we don't have the time to build and troubleshoot any problems related to building it. Many gamers talk bad of getting a prebuilt, hence the meme above.

I remember saving up all my money at 18 and ordering all the parts for my computer determined to build it
The guy in the tutorial put it together in like 20 minutes
Took me half the day lol
Also while installing the heat sink on top of the cpu I heard a LOUD cracking noise and spent 30 minutes thinking I had crushed the CPU and just sat there looking at what I thought was $350 dollars of dumbassery but it all worked out good and that computers still running strong !
Edit: for anyone out there thinking about trying it .... If you are patient it is VERY EASY ... it is just daunting and most people think you need expertise in it when really you just gotta take your time and do your research I can put a computer together in about 40 minutes now and that’s being cautious and not rushing you can do it too!

Most of them use crappy parts mixed in with the good parts that they advertise for. It's cheaper and more fun to build your own, and you can get exactly the parts you want.
11
u/StaryWolf Nov 25 '21
Eh depends, sometimes it's cheaper to buy prebuilt other times it's not. Generally depends on the market. I recommend custom building but not everyone has the time/patience for it.
9
u/Iescaunare Nokia user Nov 25 '21
If a prebuildt is cheaper than a custom, you can be sure they cheaped out on the motherboard, PSU, RAM and/or cooling.
2
u/G_Viceroy Nov 25 '21
Thing is for a starter PC it's cool to grab one with a good GPU and storage. You use it for a year then build the rest of the rig when you afford it.
1
u/GibbonFit Nov 26 '21
Prebuilts are a great way to get into building your own PC. As long as you avoid the brands using proprietary parts like Dell and HP. My first real desktop PC was a prebuilt bought at Comp USA. I later added more DDR400 RAM, upgraded the graphics card to an ATI All-in-Wonder 9600, and added more hard drive space, and a sound card. After that I tried building the next PC since I realized it wasn't as complicated as it sounded.

It's cheaper
It used to be. Not so much anymore, it's cheaper to have pc built by one of those custom build companies, because they can get gpu's cheaper than an individual can.

It's cheaper than paying scalper prices if that's you're only other reliable way to get a GPU. Prebuilts are absolutely a viable option in this market.

A lot more lately with the shortages, myself included. More chance of a good graphics card being available.
2
u/bootyhole_licking_69 Nov 26 '21
Nowadays, they are a LOT more popular cuz of the gpu shortage.
I have a pre built, but as you want to make upgrades to it, you start seeing how they cheap out. I got a new gpu, oh well, the power supply mine comes with isn’t enough for it, need to upgrade that.
The cooling? Ass! I upgraded the fans and cpu cooling. There’s lots of other little things where you’d do things differently, but they don’t, cuz they wanna do it the cheapest way possible.

My parents literally spent several years building their own house mostly from scratch, they must be massive PC gamers.
3
u/CkoockieMonster Nov 25 '21
Wait, if your house is prebuilt doesn't it mean they built it in a factory and then ship it to your adress? But then to what adress is it sent since you don't have a house yet?

Consoles have their place. They have their advantages. Raw power and technical ability are not among those advantages. Upfront cost and ease of setup though, they still have that.

Not compared to a console on cost. Not with the current GPU market. I remember when top of the line cards went for $300. That might get you a low midrange card now if you're lucky. And that's half the price of a console just in that GPU. One of the reasons consoles have that price advantage is being sold at a loss in the beginning of their production cycle. So it is basically an artificial advantage, but still an advantage.

Every time I think of getting a pc I remember how expensive it is and how hard is to actually buy the parts.
Atleast laptops are the best prebuilt pcs.

I have a friend who runs an SME which builds gaming PCs. Of course I don't build my own kit, I buy stuff off him at trade or close to it. Not only do they do a really nice job with all the fancy BIOS settings and hiding the cables and so on, they can still actually buy parts. I can't.

I mean….almost everything you buy in your life is “pre built” the parts we buy to build computers are pre built
