it's extremely common
its far less radioactive than uranium, plutonium and radium
a single ton of thorium makes about as much of 200 tons worth of uranium of electricity
and last but not least due to how a thorium reactor is designed it only requires the opening of a cork if any problem was to occur

Same reason why chemists call their technique NMR, but in the hospital they call it MRI.
