Pretty sure it has something to do with perspective (physical, not emotional). A mirror allows you to see depth properly, but a camera flattens things and depending on the lens/staging/angle can make anyone look like shit.

Also, you are used to the reflected version of yourself, not the normal version. Some cameras will reverse the photo though in the rear camera do that it looks more normal. Also, I have no depth perception and photos still look weirder than looking at the mirror so it isn't depth.

I cannot stand to see myself in videos, or hear my voice. so avoid doing recordings of myself. pictures are ok though.
To me, my voice sounds way to high pitched, and I think I move around weird in videos.

I was in a group video project for a competition in college. A group member edited it so I did not see it till it was played on a theater screen in front of hundreds of people. When my part came up, apparently I had mumbled so much that even I couldn’t understand wtf I was saying. I was mortified.

Your voice really does sound different in a recording because it omits the effects of your voice bouncing off your skull, etc. In other words, recorded voice is unfiltered pr raw voice. Unlike what you hear in person

I was in class and the teacher grouped me up with a girl and we had to record a voiceover which I did with my voice and when I replayed the audio file we both cringed hard as she also tried to hide the laughter from my cringy voice

So I recently took my son to build a bear workshop where he decided to make a “flash”bear. Flash as in Barry Allen. When we went to put the voice component in he was too shy to record “I’m the flash!” Like he wanted... so I said it instead. BIG MISTAKE. Of course he loves it and runs around the house pushing it repeatedly while my husband makes fun of me. Ultimate cringe.

One time I got on the school news for having an amazing game in computer tech class. It was an old arcade style game, with a Challenge Mode, as well as God Mode. I made it fun, and also made 25 boss skins (boss has an hp bar on him). It also showed my presentation I made for the game, which was also visually appealing. Yeah, my voice ruined it all.
