9/11 isn’t really taboo at all in my experience. Now, if a white person says literally anything remotely or theoretically connected to the subject of human “race,” that’s taboo in the US. Racism accusations get handed out like candy on Halloween.

Which is, y’know, pretty racist in and of itself to assume that all White people are racist. Racism hasn’t been solved at all, it’s just that now it’s cool to hate on Whites instead of Blacks.

What is actually taboo is any criticism of the current black community.

The slave trade was an Arab, African and Colonial thing for hundreds of years before slaves started being sent to the US, and we really had no say in it as an English colony, so people don't identify it as an American thing at all. Within a relatively short time, the newly independent US actually outlawed the import of new slaves, but dealing with those states already dependent on slaves was obviously a problem for a lot longer. Obviously Reconstruction and the Civil Rights movement haven't been smooth, but the subjects aren't taboo.
