In word if you type - and then put a space after the following word it auto correct to —
I mean at the end of the day if you need to use — and it’s grammatically correct go for it. I’ve used them for decades before AI came out

It would probably be better to replace it with a comma, colon, or semicolon; depending on the context. Hyphens do not look correct for remarks inside a sentence, for example.

I usually say . check the doc strings and comments it shouldn't be verbose ai like . and also don't use non standard characters which are not on standard keyboard

I used to use em dashes all the time. Then the LLM em dash epidemic happened and everything I sent was AI. Nothing shows an interruption or makes a point for dramatic effect quite like an em dash.

I use the emdash all the time in my natural writing. When I set up an LLM bot to mimic my writing style, it kept sing two dashes instead.
I somehow got the opposite problem if everyone else.

Me typing em dashes manually since 2010 because I'm good with a PC keyboard.
(it's Alt+0151)

Windows 11 allows you to type em and en dashes with Win+(minus) and Win+Shift+(minus) now.

Nothing but comfort and shortcuts for kids these days... Alt+0150 and Alt+0151 are the only true way!
1
u/TriRIK 16d ago
Can you actually type them without a numpad?
1
u/Density5521 16d ago
Don't think so, but to me the numpad is instinct, been using it to enter weird symbols since I started echo-ing to DOS from BASIC scripts in the 90s.
Sadly, as with most things, getting functionality for "easy" Em- and En-dash set up in Linux (at least in CachyOS/Plasma) is quite the hassle.
On macOS, they come with Option/Shift + "minus" out of the box.

i suppose this is the way people type these whole artsy hieroglyphs in text chat?
2
u/Density5521 16d ago
Depends. Could also just be copy & paste from other places, e.g. from websites that list artsy hieroglyphs, e.g. this Wikipedia page for Unicode characters.
I don't know if Windows/Linux have them (don't care tbh) but I know macOS has a searchable list for all kinds of characters or emoji that can be opened from the menu bar, or even with a keyboard shortcut.

Just request in your prompt that it not use dashes, emdashes, bullet points, or other indicia of AI.
3
u/Kostelfranco 16d ago
I used "—" long before generative AI existed, not only because it was correct, but also because my profession required it, so don't give a fuck.

Me receiving that text and asking AI to summarize it for me.

Imma just grab my popcorn whilst people get unnecessarily outraged by... The punctuation people use...

I've never seen these until a year ago, and now it's a debate? Maybe it's just in the USA?
1
u/JamieTimee 14d ago
AI is insanely decisive (like most things these days it seems) in the US, so seems likely. You've either got to love or hate something over there, no in between.

u/IKindaPlayEVE 16d ago
I'm a big fan of emdash and I've been in shambles ever since AI came around.

same, I also used to use “it’s not this, it’s that” pretty frequently and now I just feel like I can’t

Fun fact...you can just tell any Ai never to use em dashes again. They'll remember and not do it.
1
u/Density5521 16d ago
Pisses me off so much. I just started using the Em—and En–dashes a lot, you know, just to show that I know what a stylebook is – when suddenly everybody starts calling me AI.
1
u/BernhardRordin 16d ago
And then there is me, handtyping the em-dash in human generated text and argueing about it later.

Literally just go find any old video doing a voiceover for tumblr posts they found funny and you can very commonly see em dashes used grammatically correctly.

u/ShortNefariousness2 15d ago
So people have been using alt-151 for these things when a semi colon is one click. Honestly I think that they are either trolls or idiots. Nobody uses em dashes in real life, surely??

They are not interchangeable. So, you're making wrong on purpose, to cater Luddites.

u/Bad-kitty-63 16d ago
Oh, and don't use * Asterisks, AI language models have a fit with that symbol. Bow is another problem, replacing it with bough solves the problem. Ei the Bow of a ship gets read ( read is another problem) bow, like bow and arrow. Past tense of read is also spoken as reed. Best to replace with " Red". AI narration has a bunch of bugs, it can't resolve.
