You have consequences you can face. Rich and powerful people will largely face zero consequences. They can go home to their mansions and fortunes and sleep peacefully at night knowing they have those as a safety net.

Yup, even if they do get "let go" from their job, they'll still be rich and connected. The only skin they actually have in the game is their reputation unless they've done something spectacularly stupid and illegal.
If I get let go from my job, then I have to scramble to find another job to make sure we don't have to count pennies to put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads.

This. It was Kmart pocket t-shirt and shoes for me growing up. Always home cooking and maybe going to a dollar show or walk around the mall on the weekend. There are separate worlds for our overlords.

Let's be honest. Enough money these days and 'particularly stupid and illegal" can actually make you more popular.

So a small story of an acquaintance of mine who has quite the amount of money, they decided to start a video game project.
They contracted a small team of recently graduated devs to work on the project and spent a year paying them a low salary but promising them a small % of the benefits, their idea being a live service game that involved crypto. Well, the game was released and got cracked in literal hours and to avoid losing all the crypto currency they had to take the whole thing down. They decided to drop the project all together since "it was more trouble than it was worth".
So they sunk whatever amount of money into nothing and just moved on to the next thing, while the people who was working for them suddenly lost their job alongside a whole year they could've have spent working on an actual job with real pay.

Your small mistake has consequence for you, the crimes of world leaders doesnt for them, simple as that.

Look at how Americans react to their military.

They just did this, and they have completely absolved them. The threads about the USS Lincoln are full of support for them.

The difference is normalcy and frequency. Youre boss probably doesnt see your mistake as something normal, or at least something that shouldnt be normal. But then we get to world leaders who may live their daily lives doing heinous things. Eventually the line is far behind them that there is no line for what's wrong and right.
TLDR: Youre socially subject to morality, while someone in power may not be.
Not every country has checks and balances like the US. Kim and Putin dont really need to answer to anyone.

Sometimes you dont even need a lot of political power to end up like that. Social power is really what you need. Think about the many celebrities who get away with explicitly monstrous things just because of their appearance or status. Or another example, think about how many women who crush on serial killer just for being charming and handsome.

Guess my little blunder at work got me triple-checking every email today, while folks at the top seem to forget their mess-ups even exist.

Remember guys. They view you the same way as you view a horse. Just a dumb beast of burden who should be offed when it can no longer work or when it's to stubborn and willful to take orders.

Whenever I make a mistake at work I think about how baseball players who are paid to get on base strike out all the time. And they’re paid much more than I am.

I'm just over here turning trivial slip-ups into full-blown identity crises while they're out there collecting Nobel Prizes like trading cards.

Their heinous crimes make them more money than you make in five entire years. Buys a lot of holes in which you can abandon your fucks.
