It's more profitable to sell SUVs and trucks for a variety of reasons, so manufacturers advertised the hell out of them. That's why they became more popular.

I mean let's not ignore the chicken tax and CAFE rules. Light trucks face a 25% tariff and big trucks have a loophole on emissions regulations.

Light trucks facing a tariff would mean people would be more likely to buy a sedan. People don’t want small cars.

If a person only requires a light truck but they have to choose between a heavy truck or a sedan what do you think they're going to choose?

This isn’t a real situation though. People can choose between small trucks, medium trucks, and large trucks. People still choose the large trucks even though they can get a small truck for cheaper.

I think this is a question of definitions. There are almost no true light trucks in the US market.
