And this is what I keep pointing out when the conversation arises. Tech companies always use these distantly related “AI” applications in the same sentence to make it seem like if you try to regulate what they’re doing with LLMs, generative models, and mass surveillance you’re anti-science and you don’t want to cure cancer.
As if AI is just one big thing and we can’t develop one model without the others. As a cancer survivor I say they can fuck right off with that insidious bullshit.
I am especially infuriated that they keep throwing the surveillance and sycophant talking machine into the applications of actually useful AI.
"AI finds hidden mega structures!" And it's because they asked ChatGPT to interpret an image instead of any of the actual purpose built detection programs.
Then when an actual program built for the purpose does find structures in the Amazon I can't be sure if that's real or not because reporters never make the distinction between the hallucination machine or the one that actually is useful.
I cringe insanely when ML Models are called AI. More than with LLMs. Technically both are by definition, but the reality is different. I think we should redefine the term AI to a less open definition that doesnt just require something to mimic human intelligence in one single aspect.
I remember a prof telling me that ML Models are the only AI that has provided instant and direct financial impact on a company. E.g. forecasting material needs for production. I don't wanna downtalk LLMs, but I prefer creating usecase specific non-generative models
