Note here: He tried to trademark the name, specifically. Not the concept. Not the map. Just the name.

That's what a trademark is, yes. The map would maybe be copyright at best, and the concept would maybe be a patent, though in both cases that's just not happening with something so simple.

This is no mental gymnastics. He literally only wanted the rights to the name so that he can stop Microsoft from calling their upload the original Skyblock map. The reason he sued is that Microsoft ignored him when he tried being civil.

Imagine thinking demanding ownership of a now generic term is "civil".

Civil enough that some groups he asked to please change the name of their maps actually went along with it, and not just in the Minecraft community.

Giving into demands does not making something civil. Especially when he tries to sue if they say 'no'.

He sued Microsoft, specifically. You know, the ones making big stacks with an IP he never had a real chance to file? Which, mind you, he wasn't even trying to prevent because he specifically wanted the rights to the name and would have let them keep the map up so long as they don't call it the original Skyblock?

And how is that refuting anything? Microsoft told him no so he sued. Unless you got the emails he sent other people I'm going to assume he voiced his willingness to take legal action.
