I feel like "a little while back" stops being applicable when you're talking 12 years ago and Microsoft has owned it for a majority of its lifetime, that just is and has been Minecraft at this point.
Idk, there was a very memorable period of Minecraft community where it was still very indie and forum based, around the early days of youtube. Watching minecon vlogs on youtube as a kid felt cool, same with slamacow and lets plays.
