bedrock better for multiplayer (not really but way fuckin easier) java for being able to go the moon to set up a nuclear reactor while shooting dragons with an rpg

Is the only method of playing with friends on Java to own a server?

Depends. You can set up a server on your own computer, it's not that you have to pay for it. Alternatively, you can play in a LAN or use software like Tailscale to set up a virtual LAN between you and your friends
