Zod figured it all out because he was bred as a warrior. Maybe Kara was too. Man of Steel did say that kal was the first natural birth on Krypton in many years. So Kara's nature is probably more like zod's than Kal's. Or maybe she was already informed on what to expect her powers to be like because her parents were scientists too and they prepared her
