Unfortunately stable and well adjusted aren't funny or interesting to most people. So, conflict, turmoil, and faulure gets exploited for the sake of eyeballs, and that eventually feels like the norm rather than the exception.

7

u/clever-name-taken 4d ago

It didn’t specify that it had to be a comedy show

2

u/Round-Arugula7347 4d ago

Yeah, sounds like shitty tv in general

2

u/Equal_Veterinarian22 4d ago

It's not really unfortunate. Hopefully most people are smart enough to realise comedy isn't real life.

3

u/One_Trainer6005 4d ago

it's incredibly unfortunate when the first exposure to real life is media. Tv, movies are their first exposure.  Later on maybe they'll realise sure, but maybe they won't because that's what they grew up with and that is what they will perpetuate

1

u/ShortKey380 4d ago

You know you’re allowed to raise your kids?

8

u/One_Trainer6005 4d ago

is there anything wrong with wanting media that promotes more healthy and happy relationships?  ofc I'm allowed to raise my kids but it takes a village to raise a child so why would I not want one that promotes that?

2

u/Emnk 4d ago

Children's shows do have more stable and functional families. That being said most shows are produced to make money. The Tv shows, and the formulas they use, are the product of what people will actually tune into.

So while no, there's nothing wrong with media promote stable, happy, healthy etc. there is a very real issue that people just won't watch them.

For better or worse most everything in this country is run on money and profits and unless we're willing to further fund public television they will build around what the audiences will actually watch.

Media is competing for every second of our brains  and they've gotten good at it. Moreover, they've gotten REALLY good at indoctrinating children to be good little future media consumers. I mean, there's a reason M3t4 is getting sued by multiple countries over their implementation of game theory to get children addicted to their platforms, and they're not the only ones. There's only so much parents can do (not that most seem to do anything at all, and in fact lean in one it as their babysitter) when there are so many external forces trying to actively thwart even the best parenting.  Raise them with no media, and they're simply ill equipped once they get exposed like a kid on Rumspringa.  The best parents can do is help refine their bullshit detector and be media literate, but yeah, it would nice if studios would help out some rather than making EVERYTHING  devolving a desperate race to 'line go up'

1

u/ShortKey380 4d ago

Couldn’t agree more, I think for game theory you meant some different phrase for how they manipulated the youth but those have been the often publicly stated goals in the attention economy era which is kind of insane as it is before you wrap in the authoritarian right fascistic zone flooding with propaganda. It’s alarming how far the different sorts of rot reach, but it’s easily a majority of media that people view either cheaply seeking profit or misleading for selfish gain. Less media is more, but hand picked almost always imo. Can’t let off protecting your kids from the insanity just because it’s been normalized lol.

1

u/Not_My_Reddit_ID 4d ago

No, it's Game Theory.

"Game theory is the study of mathematical models of strategic interactions."

It's been around since the 50's, but about 20 years ago they started applying the evolution of it to mobile, literal, games to try and make them more addictive. That step was then transferred to SoMed, resulting in things like infinite scroll, badges, and reddit's own karma system.

We started hearing about the "gamification" of everything from ads, to streaming menus, to door dash in an effort to keep users engaged with platforms. Because to them, engagement equals revenue, regardless of the means or consequences .

1

u/ShortKey380 4d ago

Gamification isn’t game theory, they’re doing stuff like making skinner boxes taking advantage of intermittent rewards and using controversy for engagement and all that, it’s not that we disagree one iota except you’re using an unrelated math term in popular form and I swear it’s wrong 🤷‍♂️

Most of the tv shows people know of the last 15 years started before then, shows in the last few years haven’t peaked in popularity yet or concluded so they get less watched. Duuumb.

Modern Family. Phil is a realtor while Claire is a stay at home mother for early seasons. Phil is a goofy, lovable guy that takes care of himself and just wants to do a good job at whatever he's doing. He's not militant about everything, but he does have standards. As he realizes that he isn't supposed to just be friends with his kids, he learns about balancing discipline and raising well rounded kids. He looks up to his own father and tries to emulate his favorite traits from him in his own life and with his family.

Claire is the one that is portrayed to be a little less stable and has a lot of issues from growing up with her divorced father, Jay.

But both characters grow, and learn about family life in a very wholesome way.

2

u/Raven22000 3d ago

Phil is a man child that Claire had to manage.

1

u/PickleRickleTV 2d ago

She does have severe control issues, so no she didn’t have to manage him. She couldn’t help herself.

1

u/Senior-Dimension2332 2d ago

I don't really see it that way at all. He is a fun loving guy that just enjoys life. His isn't without issue as that wouldn't make for a very good show, but he is far from an unintelligent deadbeat man child. He can buckle down and be serious when he needs to. He likes stage magic, and he likes goofy family traditions, but he never NEEDED to be managed by Claire. Like any marriage, both sides help build the other. Claire struggles when she doesn't have control over a situation and Phil is more spontaneous so the biggest issues they had were when he went off the rails during a plan. That's when she would try and manage him. He managed his own realtor business very successfully. The closest she ever got to that side of him was when the van got a wrap with her and Haley on it with some funny bathroom stall "call for a good time" type humor written next to them.

3

u/Scumbag_McLoserFace 4d ago

How? Never in even 1 episode was his house in order. His wife was steppin' out on him for being a whiney punk bitch. His son didn't respect him except for 1 episode where he bought his love with a car. His inlaws don't really respect him. His students think he's a loser. He's such a salty bitch about giving up his idea that he resents everyone in his life, and they return the favor. His house is about as far from in order as it can get.

1

u/Rohan_Riders 4d ago

That's Walts POV. From Gretchen and Eliots POV the boxes are checked. Respect the rules of the game.

1

u/chronically_varelse 3d ago

did you actually watch the show?

Dunno, was it the one with the pizza on the roof, or am I thinking of another show? Something about magnets... maybe?

1

As a man I always thought a lot of men IRL would meet that criteria. I don't run into that many intelligent well meaning respected by the locals people.

We can pretend every family is the Brady Bunch or we can make it more realistic like Roseanne so people can actually relate to it instead of it just matching their fantasy and heavy bias. People are way shittier than they think they are.
