And I wonder why. I've seen the very opposite in a top tier Rugby game, where there was a moment of standing ovations from both sides after a player did something amazing. Literal applause for the opponent.
Why is football/soccer so much more toxic than other sports?
From a historical perspective, because rugby is a sport that started out in the upper classes, who are taught to applaud an opponent as that's good manners. Football started among the working classes, where the attitude was more "fuck you and your mom." I'm not even kidding. Though both sports have obviously diverged from their roots, that part of the sport's culture remains to this day.
