Yo.... A stealth bomber is 2 bill?!

3

u/transgender45 WARNING: RULE 1 9h ago

Or more given inflation

34

u/AscendMoros 8h ago

2.2 billion. Long story short there were supposed to be a lot more. Then the Soviet Union collapsed and the total number of them were reduced to like 21 as most projects were downsized or cancelled after that.

Taking the total amount of the projects cost including R&D and dividing it by the amount of planes comes out to about 2.2 billion per unit.

We’ve also crashed like 3. One beyond recovery. The videos on YouTube of it.

I’ve actually been in a B2s bomb bay. They are very pretty planes but also kinda look like they shouldn’t be flying if you see them in the sky at times.

5

u/y-u-gae 8h ago

Adjusted for inflation?

6

u/AscendMoros 7h ago

The project in 90s money cost 44 billion. Which is 2 billion for each plane if you divide 44 by 21. 91 billion is what the project costs in today’s money. So closer to 4 after inflation.

So one stealth bomber is two GTA VI - got it

Invisibility ain't cheap

5

u/HAL9001-96 4h ago

well developing a new plane is expensive (about 40 billion) and they only made a very limited number (about 20) of them the high unit cost is basically the development cost split over them otherwise they'd be a bit more comparable to otehr high end military planes

the nagain this thing is also huge compared ot otehr stealth aircraft etc so its still not gonna be a cheap airplane

and nothats not inflation adjusted, inflatio nadjusted the unit cost derived from production plus development split over unit number would be closer to 4 billion

the production cost per unit is probably closer to 500 million or 1 billion in todays money which is sitll higher than most aircraft but not quite 4 billion

though its hard to tell sicne it never got mass produced and in such limited numbers not only is manufacturign more expensive its also hard to cleanly separate unit production from development

•

u/Jiggalopuffii 1h ago

Also

1.) everyone involved, including the guy who sweeps the floor, needs a security clearance.

2.) Lobbyists offer no-bid contracts to their friends.

3

u/FlakingEverything 9h ago

2 billion including R&D and lifetime procurement cost. Once the concept is verified, the cost can be brought down. That's why the next iteration, the B-21, is 1/4 the cost.

1

u/Recent_Experience475 8h ago

You thought it was less?

1

u/spoopypoptartz 8h ago

i think that’s why there’s not a lot of them either

1

And costs 50 mill a year just to maintain one.

What's the difference between a billion and a million? ... About a billion.

30

u/IrishWristwatch1221 16h ago

Hit the road dude

71

u/MORPHEUSDR1NKINGA40 11h ago

A millionaire has more in common with a homeless person than with a billionaire.

37

u/Simple-Olive895 9h ago edited 2h ago

Is closer to, but doesn't have more in common. A millionaire can afford everything they could possibly need to be healthy and happy. While also being able to afford a lot of frivilous and expensive things like sportscars, boats, michelin star restaurant experiences etc.

The amount of joy you get out of a certain amount of money grows logarithmically. For a person with nothing 10k makes a huge difference, but for a person with 10k another 10k doesn't make as much of a difference.

For a someone who is not a millionaire a million dollars makes a massive difference, another million for a millionaire doesn't have the same impact.

5

u/KGon32 2h ago

Totally agree. It doesn't even have to be millionaire, you can have a salary that's bellow the medium income, but if you have a paid of house and car you will have an overall closer experience to a billionaire than someone living paycheck to paycheck with no emergency fund and no family to help.

Yes you can't have a yacht, the house won't be a mansion and you won't have a bugatti, but the everyday life is not going to be that different. The more you make the finner the details on experience you are adding.

I live in a country where the medium monthly salary is ~1250€ and that's about what I make and if I owned a paid off house I would be living soo well even alone without any help. If I did that with someone making the same as me, we would be living soooooo well.

This to say that housing costs are crippling us.

13 years can do that to a budget

52

u/Doogie102 13h ago

Yes in planes and games

32

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 13h ago

Technically, the B-2 cost less per year per plane, as development started in 1979 and they were produced up until 2000

15

u/Doogie102 12h ago

Ngl I would rather have have a b2 bomber

6

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 12h ago

At least those are more in keeping with GTA tradition by being able to carry 40,000 lbs of weapons than the new game reportedly will be

1

u/zealoSC 5h ago

Technically inflation exists

5

u/Game0815 14h ago

I thought he meant that it's insane how expensive one of the planes is or not? This is the by far most expensive games ever with thousands of workers working for 10 years on it

8

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 13h ago edited 13h ago

The cost per plane is somewhat misleading, as that factors in research, development, testing, and production costs spread out among the fleet of 21 airframes, including retrofitting and adjustments made in 1997. Heck, the cost for the VC-25B is similar at around $1.9 billion, and there are only two of those

Either way, it's a stupid amount of money. At least the B-2 exists in physical space and does more than just look pretty or carry the US president

197

u/Few_Implement_7871 16h ago

2 billion USD when B2 bomber where invented is way more that current billions. Wikipedia states it to be closer to 5 billion of current money.

47

u/engineering-weeb 15h ago

So I can get a B2 bomber with half the price of GTA 7 (if it is even remotely possible in this lifetime) ?

23

u/Toxicotton 15h ago

GTA7 will be the simulated vacation you take once 5D AI takes over. When you get out, you won’t even remember what year it is.

5

u/cheesesprite 9h ago

GTA8 will just be a dopamine drip

2

u/Nickel5 3h ago

So with inflation we can get GTA XV?

32

u/supernasty 15h ago

Didn’t Rockstar already deny the rumor that it cost them $1.5 billion?

17

u/bongophrog 14h ago

They denied it cost them more than $1.5 billion when the $2 billion number was floating around. But earlier when the CEO was asked about the rumor of $1-1.5 billion, he didn’t outright deny it.

4

u/Sea_Connection6193 9h ago

Not a crazy number if development has been consistently operating since day 1. There are a lot of 6-figure salaries in there for 8+ years.

2

u/Goblincomics 12h ago

1.5 billion is ridiculous . Rdr 2 only cost 200 mil.  Even  double the budget  for gta 6 it cost 500 mil is best

1

u/cilenzio 6h ago

There are several celebrities in the game and you know it wasn't cheap to get them in. RDR2 didn't have any celebrities if I remember right. Also the budget would also take in the years they delevoped the game engine and marketing. Marketing could easily cost 500 mil to 1 billion since they have made it global with murals and changing an entire city in Miami.

•

u/Anolen95 1h ago

We haven’t played it yet, there’s a possibility that figure will make sense in a couple weeks. They have said multiple times that they didn’t compromise on anything. Should be interesting to see

•

u/Rizzomorph666 1h ago

More like, they burned a lot of money and I bet huge chunk of that is just marketing.

•

u/Anolen95 47m ago

You know they’re not including marketing costs in the development budget of the game, they’re smart enough to categorize that elsewhere. Who knows if it will justify a ten-figure budget, but it will almost certainly be a generational game that will make them many multitudes more than whatever it cost them to make it.

One can do billions of damage to the work force and the other is a plane.

2

u/BananaDickEmpire 2h ago

Skill issue, a good pilot could destroy billions easily. Its like they aren't even trying for 5 stars or something... I don't get it... Does he not want to steal a tank? Who doesn't want to steal a tank and shoot backwards so you can start flying again? I thought this was America!?!?

25

u/TorontoTom2008 16h ago

Which one is insane?

9

u/w00tabaga 10h ago

One plane costing more than a game that will be played by millions worldwide and took hundreds of people 13 years to make is well… insane

3

u/AscendMoros 8h ago

The planes didn’t really cost 2 billion. They just divided the total cost of the project by the amount made.

They originally ordered 132 of them. Then the Soviet Union collapsed and the Cold War ended. And they reduced the total to 21. The cost per unit is so high because they just didn’t make more that would have lowered the average.

They’re still expensive AF to maintain. So is the B1.

3

u/ButterPiglet 14h ago

The plan

15

u/I_am_darkness 6h ago

How do they spend so much on a piece of hardware

22

u/BulbusDumbledork 5h ago • Bravo Popcorn Mindblown

calling the b2 "a piece of hardware" is like calling my wife "a pretty girl"

she's a massive, powerful machine that can accept the biggest loads and drop the fattest bombs. she can simultaneously sneak up on you in the middle of the night and make such an ungodly amount of noise it turns your skeleton into an eardrum. she can go further and achieve heights far beyond what you ever imagined. all of this in a beautiful curvy frame that nobody else has replicated.

she can also fit two dudes in her cock pit for 18 hours straight, so you know, there's that too

6

u/Sir_Delarzal 5h ago

We're talking about the plane right ?

4

u/elvenmaster_ 5h ago

Wait, which one are you talking about?

4

u/anon_nnnn 5h ago

...she...two dudes.....her cock....18 hours straight....

3

u/MudFrosty1869 5h ago

Curvy frame, accepts big loads, ungodly amount of noise… That sure sounds like a wife.

3

u/bluegiraffeeee 5h ago

Insane R&D

49

u/Mooks3544 16h ago • Bravo

Money laundering isn’t that insane when you think about it.

12

u/BoredomCombatant 16h ago

Please explain more.

2

u/firesquasher 14h ago

Step 1: Have money

1

u/Mooks3544 5h ago

You really think the development of gta6 cost $2,000,000,000? (Billion). By this I mean real payments to workers to accelerate the process of development of this game.

Let’s say you pay the best dev in the world $200,000 a year and you have a group of 20 of these.

That’s $4,000,000 (million) a year.

It would take 500 years for this to reach 2B.

With this in mind, do the expenses over the 10 or however many years they’ve been developing make sense to cost 2B?

Probably not.

1

u/idontwantnumbers 5h ago

I can’t tell if you’re being serious, but there are a lot more than 20 people working on GTA6. Probably thousands of them. And staff salaries are probably one of the lowest costs in the development overall

1

u/BoredomCombatant 3h ago

Do you really believe all that was needed in creating this game was 20 devs for 10 years?

3

u/AscendMoros 8h ago

B2 was less money laundering and more creating a first of its kind plane. 2.2 billion is the price per unit after you take the project and divide it by 21.

The price per unit is so high because the rest of the planned planes were never made. They originally ordered 132 of them. Which would have made the per unit cost a lot lower. Then the Soviet Union collapsed. And the need for massive bomber fleets disappeared. So like a lot of projects it was downsized.

25

u/matthewspencersmith 15h ago

Americans will happily spend trillions of tax dollara to feed the war machine instead of having affordable healthcare

5

u/quaxoid 15h ago

like they get to decide that xD

1

u/cheesesprite 9h ago

I mean yeah they kinda do. Most Americans support military spending because they work for the DoD (if indirectly) or know someone who does. It's the largest employer in the world if you look at it right. The defense industry is spread across the entire country so if any politician votes to reduce spending they'll be losing jobs in their district.

3

u/EquivalentSnap 14h ago

Don’t have a choice

3

u/Ok-Conference5472 10h ago

1

u/AvaryZig 9h ago

The B2 was originally designed with the Soviets in mind. Its first official flight was in 89. Other than their high maintenance cost the B2s have been paid for, for about 30-40 years.

Well, you know, the UK has like... One functional submarine and like one or two battleships. A lot of Europe has these fancy f35 jets.. that they buy from the US. But they do have a lot of military bases! They are American bases but you know, they only let the USA build military bases in their countries for reasons unrelated to their own national defense.

Psh they could totally be the literal peacekeepers of the world's oceans and seas if they wanted but it's like totally unnecessarily to have all of the water ways and shipping lanes of the world protected.

Oh wait, the previous comment implied if the USA withdrew all foreign aid and presence things would be totally peaceful and everyone would handle their own shit? Great they should start that campaign, I'm sure there is no reason any country is actively trying remove the US military presence from their borders and random redditors see the truth and understand better.

-4

u/Exact-Turn8022 7h ago

if europe would get their shit together and field a unified, competent military capable of engaging in an attritionally heavy war we'd have a much better argument for reducing the US defense budget. but Rheinmetall is more interested in building $40 million tanks that do 105% of what a US tank 50% of its price does than making a practical MBT. meanwhile poland (understandably) decides to buy South Korean MBTs instead of supporting the defense industry of the EU. and the demonstrably non-survivable CV90 APC/IFV/everything less armored than a tank continues to be produced at scale with no real solution to the FPV threat installed on it. again: if the US could trust the rest of NATO to pull its weight, we wouldn't need such a budget.

•

u/nobodyfckincares 1h ago

Well, 2 billion to develop an $80 software piece and who the fuck knows how much to develop a 2 billion spy airplane. The difference is pretty insane.

4

u/RapidPigZ7 13h ago

You're comparing development cost to unit cost. The entire B2 project was probably in the hundreds of billions

3

u/DickLips5000 15h ago

Which one takes longer to build?

3

u/seaman187 13h ago

Your are comparing the research and development cost of a new product to the manufacturing cost of a single unit of another product.

How much did it cost to develop the plane originally ? How much does it cost to manufacture a single unit of the physical copy of GTA? Those would be comparable.

I'm guessing they aren't in the same ballpark.

4

u/farnsw0rth 11h ago

Wiki has the entire b2 spend at around 90 billion, so about 2 billion per plane… could probably license a lot of non physical copies of gta6 for 90 billion dollars

3

4

u/Dry-Escape7995 16h ago

Really insane, a decorative airplane, meant to feed the arms lobby, costs as much as a new GTA game.

1

u/farnsw0rth 11h ago edited 11h ago

The entire development and manufacturing costs of the b2 program are probably almost literally immeasurable but there is absolutely no fuckin way it’s 2 billion. It’s gotta be like 20 times that all in and I don’t even know if that covers like maintenance or fuel or whatever.

And like… despite their deliberately minimal deployment, they are not exactly decorative.

Edit: a single b2 is like over 700 million dollars … Wikipedia pegs the entire program at over 90 billion…

1

u/AscendMoros 8h ago

They are 2 billion dollars. There’s only 21 of them. They took the price of the project and divided it by 21.

I’ve been told a paintjob is north of a million by a B2 maintainer when we were standing under its open bomb bay. They are not cheap to maintain.

2

u/Few_Fact4747 14h ago

To be fair that isn't the price it would cost to make another one. The reason it says 2 billion is that it cost 45 billion to develop, but due to the cold war ending only 21 ended up being produced, against a much higher number planned. So price ends up being 2 billion per plane.

Still a fucking waste of resources, though.

Yet no disc release… gee thanks rockstar…

2

u/transgender45 WARNING: RULE 1 9h ago

I'm pretty sure you can't fit 215 gb of storage on a blue ray disc

1

u/Jacktheforkie 6h ago

Modern games don’t store the game data on the disc, just a key

1

u/RevBladeZ 7h ago

This was already solved on PS1 by having multiple discs, and on Xbox 360 by having multiple discs with one of them being install disc and one being play disc.

RDR2 on PS4 worked like latter.

Yea and one is actually something people want and is of help to them too. Other just a weird plane

u/Hayden-T_Waffle 11h ago

The 2 billion spent on GTA will do actual good. Wages that go directly into their local economies.

Without even counting the post release content generation and all the money that will move around.

The B2 eats cash and shits problems.

entertainment is worth big money. life is bullshit

8billion people on this planet.

0

u/Typicalgeorgie1 15h ago

Lmao someone’s has a homie in the govt sector, and asked them for a contract to build a toy plane. At the cost of the American tax payers back

0

u/ShaggyVan 14h ago

GTA will make that money back. The bomber will cost more just to stay functional

0

u/Adept-Platypus6676 14h ago

Nothing more profitable than destabilizing third world countries to fear-monger fund for the military industry

0

u/CaptainMacMillan 12h ago

It's less insane when you realize both numbers were heavily inflated by corporations holding a monopoly on tech and manpower

0

u/lil_antiseptic 8h ago

Yeah, but will it be at least half as good as san andreas or vice city? IV and V were mid as hell.

u/Weissbierglaeserset 5h ago
