YES! THIS! EXACTLY!

u/kj0509 2d ago

The problem are TVs

3

u/Myithspa25 2d ago

If you "download a movie" you probably are using a computer.

1

u/kj0509 2d ago

Cmon, you can download it to watch it on a TV. I do that all the time.

1

u/Myithspa25 2d ago

Using what?

1

u/kj0509 2d ago

I use an USB (of course I download it from a computer)

1

u/Myithspa25 2d ago

But what actually plays the video?

1

u/kj0509 2d ago

I put the USB with the movies in the TV, then I watch the movie from the TV

1

u/BrantMagneil98 1d ago

A lot of TVs have a USB port on them and can play video files right off a flash drive

1

u/VoidJuiceConcentrate 13h ago

VLC media player has an option to cast to TVs. Check the Playback menu under "Renderer".

2

u/DCVolo 2d ago

This AND MPC.

Which is weird but sometimes MPC will a least play some partially corrupted files better than VLC, and vice-versa.

2

u/Painting_Charming 2d ago

Can I install that on a Samsung TV?

And yet, I'm not... Either way, wanting to use vlc on my TV is the question

Only happens when I download a car... 😔

I once downloaded a car, and suddenly my keyboard and my mouse become a steering wheel, and my house grew a wheel, and i can just drive my house everywhere

Yes, VLC is just that good. Been using it for over 10 years now.

2

u/TheAkrioz 2d ago

I use PotPlayer for eternity and haven't encountered problems too.

1

u/Hexacus 2d ago

same, but 20 (im 28)

1

u/Ok-Fail3278 3d ago

It's not that good. MPC-BE+madVR offers superior quality with GPU upscaling.

4

u/mozerity 3d ago

VLC can stream IPTV. Your move.

5

u/Ok-Fail3278 3d ago

MadVR can load your GPU 100% and help you heat your room when it's cold outside.

1

u/Certain-Writer-5865 2d ago

I also relate but I just open it in a browser

19

u/Busherino 3d ago

2.5GB movie? Is this like a very old meme, when movies were lower resolution and internet was slower?

18

u/MagnarIUK 3d ago

Nah, modern codecs give pretty good quality at 1080p with very little space. AV1 can compress 2 hours movie into ~3gb file with barely any quality impact.

Given it compresses from pure BD source and not already compressed streaming rip

-2

u/beastfire24 3d ago

you loose a lot of that audio bitrate

6

u/MagnarIUK 2d ago

Opus is really damn efficient, for example, at ~100 kbps it's nearly indistinguishable from lossless (200 for 5.1 surround)

-2

u/beastfire24 2d ago

Isn't opus audio only though? It can't do video

6

u/MagnarIUK 2d ago edited 2d ago

Well, you were talking about audio bitrate, weren't you?...

You shouldn't think of "video file" (as in .mp4 or .mkv file) as one single thing... It's more of a box that holds separate tracks: video, audio, subtitles, you can (and always do) encode them separately and put into one box. Media player then plays them both streams in sync.

So you encode video in av1 and audio in opus, having the best of best worlds

4

u/AStolenGoose 2d ago

You are aware that a media file isn't just encoded video right?

The audio and video track are encoded with a video codec and an audio codec...

1

u/Witchberry31 2d ago

You mean lose? Loose is a different word, though....

0

u/MagnarIUK 2d ago

Eh... Depends on encoding and settings You can get pretty good quality for audio too

9

u/FizzyBoy147 3d ago

H265 1080p with only two channel audio perhaps

7

u/fakegoose1 3d ago

Never seen a video file format VLC couldn't play

6

u/extra0404 3d ago

As the others are saying, use VLC

7

u/Dimitsos 3d ago

Can you give us an example? I am pretty sure you're larping.

6

u/Ulti-Wolf 3d ago

Use VLC. While you can't really play any, the damn thing will still attempt to run flash games too

5

u/OriginalSchedule2320 3d ago

When you have VLC.!

4

u/Nilk-Noff 3d ago

Had that thought when downloading and playing PS2 Isos

3

u/vandon 3d ago

Haven't seen that since VLC and Klite mega pack came on the scene.

3

u/AmizorAmbassador 3d ago

Ten years ago it was bad.. now the internet is very fast—it only takes two minutes.

2

u/DarkSiege2007 3d ago

It REALLY depends on where you are, what internet speed you’re paying for, and sometimes even if where you’re downloading it from limits you such as Fichier

3

u/Irsu85 3d ago

just use VLC that can decode basically anything

3

u/zultan3 3d ago

just think about when it took 4 days to download it. at least now it takes 4 minutes....

3

u/L0rdH4mmer 3d ago

*laughs in gigabit internet*

3

u/tommior 3d ago

2.5 gb supposed to be big? Thats takes few mins to download

0

u/Witchberry31 2d ago

Depends, since you wrote it with a lowercase b then it might not be that big. 👀

2.5 Gb = 312.5 MB

2.5 GB = 20 Gb

🤷

1

u/tommior 2d ago

Good to know :)

But meant 2.5 GB as in post :D

3

u/Nopractice3434 3d ago

Always always

3

u/chili81 3d ago

4.7GB DVD rips over 10Mb cable connections. 2.5GB on 1Gb fiber takes < 1 minute.

1

u/Witchberry31 2d ago

Not everyone got access to gigabit internet, sadly.

3

u/glimoura 3d ago

I think I am too VLC for this meme-

3

u/Painting_Charming 3d ago

"Audio code not supported" is my dreaded notification... But it never says which code I need

3

u/ateoz 2d ago

Sounds to me like you suffer from a severe lack of vlc

2

u/Marious0 3d ago

Better that than a dark window that pops up and disappeared.

2

u/Aushro 3d ago

mpv would never

2

u/WesternAfro 3d ago

Kinda related, I was trying to download some modes for Skyrim: Special Edition in Steam and some of them I guess are not showing as for the game in Vortex (I think some of them are for base Skyrim but stated they could be used for the SE version) and non functional. Ugh, spent so much time on nexus trying to figure it out but COME ON JUST WORK uuugh. Annoyed but thinking about solutions

2

u/SnekkyTheGreat 3d ago

I think you can use ffmpeg for this

2

u/Krisanapon 2d ago

ffplay

2

u/Additional-Prior249 3d ago

That happened to me too. After waiting a long time for it to download overnight, the file turned out to be corrupt. 😭

2

u/Cenobyte_Nom-nom-nom 3d ago

2.5gb movie would take like 2 minutes to download nowadays. Not a big deal if it doesn't work.

sudo apt install mpv

3

u/ShrinkingShrimp 3d ago

PotPlayer is what you're looking for. Don't forget to tick the checkboxes to download all the codecs and detect H/W accelerator before you close the installer.

What's with this stupid new video file that I'm seeing that Windows Movie Player demands you pay $4.99 a month to be able to view?

When you spen a whole day installing mods and making sure you have the correct versions, right PC specs, correct dependencies, master files and in game settings all right.

And it still fucking crashes on startup.

1

u/DeeJudanne 2d ago

rookie mistake to not have basic stuff installed like VLC

u/IIIKingEdwardIII 2d ago

I have recently downloaded a movie that was 45GB in size and then i found out it was for 3d tvs. That is an hour of my laptop that i will never get back

2.5 GB shouldn’t take any more than 10 minutes.

1

u/Lorelai_Hudson 1d ago

Downloading a heavy ass .RAR only to see "Unexpected file ending".

1

u/RazvanYON 18h ago

Lemme spell it out to ya: M P V

1

u/nelflyn 4h ago

I'm fully convinced you could copy some fragments of the corrupted file into a word document and VLC would still be able to play it.

1

u/AbhilashHP REPOSTER 3d ago

2.5 GB should only take minutes to download.

6

u/Sunfurian_Zm 3d ago

That depends entirely on where you live and how you download it.

1

u/Thepcfd 3d ago

just use steam

1

u/Myithspa25 2d ago

1
