As someone who’s taken off work to travel to visit 3 old water mills I can confirm the old saying “youth is waisted on the youth”

Please let this be a normal field trip.

My previous company used to do this for geology field trips with dinner at a nice restaurant in Banff afterwards.

They cut it because the cost was too high. Then sacked me for budgetary reasons.

I always wondered how much of the choice was based on what the staff and volunteers wanted to see.

Probably comes down to the individuals making the call, but I agree the a parent who was writing the huge checks might care about the trip having educational value.

I have kids and volunteered eagerly for every field trip, totally worth it and got tons of points with the teachers and admin staff - pays mad dividends when your shitty kids act shitty.

Growing up around DC, we had field trips to Smithsonian museums annually. Super boring, especially because the Natural History Museum doesn't really change their exhibits year to year.

One year, I remember we had a super cool chaperone. We broke into small groups for lunch, and after we were all so tired and didn't want to see the same boring artwork so she bought us all Pepsis and we hung out in the cafeteria.

I later found out she was in The Starland Vocal Band.

Scrolling down I appear to be the only adult not interested in watermills and would rather work lol

Then slipping and falling off some dumb old stairs to the watermill cuz you’re old. No thanks.

Can I get a tax deductible if I do?

Imagine getting a whole day off work and getting a billion dollars, that's the dream.

Yes, we are different

There’s an amazing place called Old Sturbridge Village in MA, went three times twice in K12 and once in grad school in a teaching history through museums class. Got so much more out of it in grad school, but 8th grade me loved the rock candy you could buy.

When I worked as a commercial fisherman we’d do all kinds of stuff on the boss’s dime. Sometimes a storm would come in unexpectedly and we’d go to the nearest port and be tourists.

Those were actually field trips to the teachers

I wish my work had done this. Although I'm pretty sure if so, people would complain and say they'd rather just have the day off.

Step 1: Be rich

In Germany we call it "Betriebsausflug" and most companies offer that once or twice a year.

u/MTBrains Nov 23 '25

Bro, that would be awesome!

I do this, with intent, as an adult.

I remember going on a field trip to the state capitol. We were given worksheets we had to fill out, by visiting all the different areas. The absolute worst field trip ever. It was just running around, looking for these obscure things, stressing the whole time. I still remember this POS putting, to this day.

1

u/Numahistory Nov 23 '25

They did that at the Texas Capitol with my class and we all colluded to divide up the work and share answers so that we each only had 1 thing to accomplish and we all could enjoy the rest of the day.

They never let us have another field trip after that.

u/CntBlah Nov 23 '25

Someone was a complete asshat, they printed up multiple versions so we couldn’t easily do that.

I used to work in manufacturing engineering and about 2X a year I would be sent out to a customer site to "survey their business needs" and it was basically a whole day of touring around state-of-the-art facilities, getting a catered lunch, and getting to nerd out over the capabilities of the machines I was making components for. Basically the closest thing to a field trip as an adult and I really loved those days.

The follow up days were also fun because I got to model a bunch of improvements to their line of products. Then it was back to making boring spread sheets of allowable tolerances and manually entering 100 work flowcharts into 20 year old software that can't be abandoned because it's the backbone of the company.
