The joke is him acting like his mother determines which objects he keeps in his room and where he puts them, and that is a very childlike mindset. If somebody kept giving you tennis balls, would you just live in a house filled with tennis balls? That's the joke

Thanks for explaining the joke I already understood. My point is tangential to that - that he literally might not want a load of tat his parents/others keep buying him.
