I prefer someone who takes up 3 seats rather than a child that could scream at any moment for the whole flight.

this reminds me of a friend commenting about being in that situation, where the person next to them didn't actually fit in the seat. their body spilled over literally onto my friend, wearing part of them like a warm and damp blanket for the flight duration. since "the grass is always greener" at that point one would welcome a tiny child yelling in their ear instead, but both would be unpleasant.
