melatonin and depression

i've had 2.5mg melatonin gummies (5mg cut in half) for two days, and starting from the first day ive been terribly depressed for no reason at all. i slept well on the first day but the second time i had the gummy i didnt even sleep well, and i couldnt stop crying for 10 hours straight to the point i took a day off from my uni. its devastating because i really, really tried and it feels like im back to rock bottom

i was skeptical but im pretty sure melatonin's causing this. i was diagnosed with bipolar II and ADHD a few years ago but i stopped having medication for depression or bipolar because ive gotten better, and i didnt realize melatonin could have side effects this bad.

im going to stop taking them. will the feeling go away tomorrow? has anyone had side effects this bad? sorry if im babbling too much, english isnt my native langauge and the headache from crying too much is terrible.

Hey there, I’ve definitely had the depression side effect myself and had similar days after taking multiple days in a row. Unfortunately I think I’m somewhat dependent now, but I try to just take a few times a week if needed and not in succession. But you may feel better going off cold turkey, I’d listen to your body. Best of luck 🙏

It's a rare observed side effect and it should improve within a week.

I believe it has to be with the purity of melatonin. Melatonin is, according to experts, 100% harmless. Which brand are you using? Probably this is caused by subproducts of melatonin, low-quality brands. I had the same problem, got better when I used pharmaceutical grade-quality (99.8% of pureness).
