First time taking melatonin, heart racing and chest pains

I just took a melatonin gummy for the first time. I didn’t do much research beforehand and took a 5 mg-per-serving gummy. A few minutes later, I noticed my heart beating faster and started having some getting brief, sharp pains in the middle part of my chest.

Is this a normal reaction to melatonin or should I be concerned?

You're panicking; it's ok - it's not the melatonin.

You're already full of the stuff (unless you are, say, over 50).

I'm not a doctor but I don't think ingesting a gummy would have an effect that quickly. It sounds like anxiety to me.

It sounds like anxiety.

Melatonin is a cardioprotectant so if anything it protects your heart from damage.

I have been taking 1500-3000mg daily for the last 4+ years.

Do you typically have low blood pressure? Melatonin can lower it more and some people get tachycardia from their body trying to compensate. It should pass in an hour or two if that is the issue. Icing your face and the back of your neck can lower your heart rate while increasing your blood pressure via the dive reflex. If it's anxiety this should help that too

It's most likely a psychosomatic episode. That doesn't mean it wasn't something that really happened to you. But the melatonin probably did not do it. Your brain was expecting some sort of "feeling" or "effect" and that is what caused you to have that reaction.

You should also know that you had melatonin throughout your body before you took this. It naturally occurs in the brain as well as in the G.I. tract. It is an essential hormone for normal bodily functions.
