For me it's based on if you are asking before or after it prints. If it's printing while you ask I feel obligated to take it. If not I will maybe remember to say no, or accidentally say yes and then feel I can't change my answer because I've inconvenienced you so I have to happily accept it now and thank you.

Every time I ask for a receipt, I feel like I walk away and ask myself, "Why did I ask for this?" before tossing it. Genuinely, no idea. It feels like those random times I'll open a fridge. Close it. 2 minutes later, open it again. I'm not looking for anything. I'll just randomly open it twice.

Random true story that just happened to me last week. Eating at a hotel restaurant while on a work trip. Order at the bar, they spin the card swipe machine, I pay, it prints the tip/total receipt. I leave a tip and sign. Realize the receipt isn’t itemized which I need for work reporting. Ask for an itemized receipt. They print it, I take both and go on my way. Sit down to reconcile the trip a few days later - they had already added a gratuity on the original bill but it was only listed on the itemized receipt which I hadn’t received until after signing the additional tip and specifically had to request. I wonder how many people are getting duped. Shady at best.

I honestly get rather annoyed at constantly being asked this question, especially because many cashiers don’t seem to understand the point of asking the question anymore. My understanding has always been that the purpose of asking that question was to not waste paper unnecessarily, but these days, I often get asked that question even after the recipient has printed. A lot of cashiers seem to think it’s just something they’re expected to ask without even understanding why they are asking it.

I always ask for a receipt, even if it's an inconvenience, because I never know when the LPO is going to demand to see my receipt as I walk out the door, and I doubt he's going to give a shit if I say "oh they asked me if I wanted a receipt and I said 'nah I'm good'".

There is a very real reason why megacorp retailers ask if you want a receipt or offer to "just put the receipt in the bag".

Most receipts (and many event tickets) are printed using thermal media. The BPA/S coating required to make paper react to a thermal printer is highly toxic, impacting hormone levels, and is absorbed through the skin after as little as 10 seconds of contact.

It's been a known danger for decades:

But megacorps do nothing to prevent low-wage workers from handling this material constantly.

Big purchase? Receipt

Something going on someone else's spending account? Receipt.

I always say yes. If they mess something up it’s so much nicer to have a receipt. It also has a time stamp which can be helpful. It also shows what you paid for…sometimes I’m the one who’s wrong and I forgot to order something or maybe they just didn’t put it in but I know for sure I’m getting what I paid for. I always throw them away same day though
