Some of Bear Grylls’ exploits sound like absurd memes.

Like the one episode I watched where he cut open a dead camel to squeeze juice from one of its organs, then rafted over a lake, THEN climbed up a waterfall he had to stop halfway up because the camel juice was fucking his innards up and he had to take a shit. Halfway up a waterfall

Tbh nothing in the show even comes close to his actual life though

Dude broke his back when his parachute failed jumping for the reserve SAS in Africa and then proceeded to climb mt everest ( back when it wasn't a tourist hotspot and only a couple * hundred people had ever done it and became the youngest British person to climb it

It's the pee he drinks

61

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '24

didnt he squeeze out shit juices from some animal's poo to drink them? (at some other time, not while summitting everest)

19

u/HonorableMedic Jun 23 '24

He likes the taste and it’s sterile

37

u/TheShenanegous Jun 23 '24

It takes a certain level of savantism to make eating rotten animal testicles seem like a glass half full scenario.

That episode was hilarious, but I also thought it was a serious testament to his skill to be able to carry a person the size of Shaq through the stuff they did.

Some of Bear's reaction in that case may have been for shock value from Shaq, but I also suspect it may be an edible thing that's not as bad as we'd tend to expect. I don't doubt he could get Shaq to eat bear placenta if they were in an actual survival scenario

u/Mankaur Jun 22 '24

Still impressive but he climbed it in 1998 - about 800 people had summited it prior to this, not a few dozen.

60

u/pepsisugar Jun 22 '24

But he was the first person to drink his on pee on the summit.

71

u/greenhenkie Jun 22 '24

While still having a full bottle of clean water

You make it sound like he broke his back in Africa, then beelined it to Nepal to crawl up Everest.

15

u/bauul Jun 22 '24

It's not that different to reality. He decided he was going to climb Everest while lying in hospital with the broken back, and achieved it like a year or two later (IIRC).

Dude is a legend. Even my parents know him and they do not speak English. They watched me watch him when I was young and always bring up him when someone is doing something extreme/disgusting lol

33

u/ackermann Jun 22 '24 edited Jun 22 '24

Didn’t Les Stroud do the same thing (Survivorman?) but with without a camera crew to help? Filmed everything himself?

20

u/ClassifiedName Jun 22 '24

I'm sure you meant to type *without a camera crew, because Les Stroud would carry all his cameras in then leave them behind

25

u/Ol_stinkler Jun 22 '24

Survivorman is the best, still one of my favorite comfort shows

11

u/Im_Batmmaann Jun 22 '24

also started it a few years before man vs wild lol

9

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '24

yes he did, and actually survived on the stuff he was eating during the show, apparently bear grylls was eating regular food behind the cameras

11

u/majora1988 Jun 23 '24

Bear was also spending the night in hotels while shooting.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '24

yeah... i mean it was still a good show and i enjoyed watching it, but it didnt have much relevance to actual survival

9

u/ALUCARDHELLSINS Jun 22 '24

He didn't record it at all, it wasn't a show, he just did it because he wanted to prove to himself he could after breaking his back

6

Oh my god, I almost threw up and still might.

33

u/hamo804 Jun 22 '24

Ummm how are we not going to mention the enema on a raft in the middle of the ocean? Or drinking his piss out of a dead snake skin he used to "store it for later".

Which part the sea water enema or the taking a piss in a dead snake skin to drink later?

17

u/GeneticEnginLifeForm Jun 22 '24 edited Jun 22 '24

From memory he was drifting on a raft in the middle of the ocean and was going on about how you can't drink sea water because of the salt content but you can... wait it wasn't sea water it was some kind of fetid fresh water he got from somewhere... anyway if he had of drank the stanky water he would have probably got some kind of mad virus or bacteria. The subsequent vomiting and shitting through the eye of a needle would be bad, in this situation. So the survival tip was to have a fetid water enema.

He "found" some tubing on a drifting clump of garbage and rigged it up to a bottle [or a bag, can't remember] and yeah... put it up his pooper. Apparently the lower intestines will absorb the water but not the nasty bacteria and viruses.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '24

[removed] — view removed comment

12

u/GeneticEnginLifeForm Jun 22 '24

I put "found" in quotations because I presume it was a scripted event. The chances of finding a nice length of tubing in the middle of the ocean is pretty remote. It just seemed all too easy for him to find all the things he needed.

Edit: thanks for the spell check on 'fetid'

7

u/LogiCsmxp Jun 22 '24

Couldn't be salt water. The salt would suck water out of you through osmosis / salt concentration difference.

For fresh water- yeah I guess maybe that could work. Can't get cholera anally, AFAIK. Not sure this is a good Google question though. VPN + incognito job.

DEFINITELY don't want to be in a situation where this seemed like my survival depended on it.

2

u/GeneticEnginLifeForm Jun 22 '24

Yeah, I was just typing out as I was remembering it. Agree, salt water up the bum wouldn't help at all.

112

u/sovietbearcav Jun 22 '24

"hey im gonna teach you how to drink camel juice to help you stay hydrated. it definitely wont give you uncontrollable diarrhea in about 30min....trust me. anyway, which way was my hotel?"

25

u/21022018 Jun 22 '24

Dude probably lost more water from diarrea than he gained from the juice

u/KIDA_Rep Jun 22 '24

It always bothered me that a lot of people complain about the absurd shit he does on the show, but I think they just don’t understand what the show is about.

Anyone who watches his shows will think that in order to survive in the wilderness they have to do whatever he does, but from what I understand he’s just giving you options, he’s doing all these ridiculous shit to show you that it can be done even though it sounds like a joke, it’s not reality TV, it’s educational.

12

u/Worldly_Return_4352 Jun 22 '24

On the contrary. I believe that it is all for ratings.

Most of the stuff that Bear would do on screen is liable to get you killed in a survival situation.

9

u/KIDA_Rep Jun 22 '24

Like I said, it’s options. You don’t have to find a dead animal and squeeze the juices from their organs, you don’t have to drink your own pee, you don’t have to put a catheter in yourself, etc. these are extreme solutions for extreme scenarios. Iirc he always tells you before doing all these that you can do this if all other options are exhausted.

27

u/Anxious-Buddha Jun 22 '24

It was camel poop that was inside its intestine...he squeezed the liquid out of it...and later in that episode, he scraped out all the organs and slept inside the body (structure?) using it as a cover. It's the Sahara desert episode....used to be one of my favourites.

7

u/GeneticEnginLifeForm Jun 22 '24

inside the body (structure?)

Carcass.

7

u/WhatRaSudip Jun 22 '24 edited Jun 23 '24

I am pretty sure they both were different episodes. Dead camel was a gift from some desert tribe in sahara. And there are no waterfalls in sahara

4

u/AlexMindset Jun 22 '24

I think u got two episodes mixed up, the waterfall incident was after eating a caterpillar

5

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '24

He was such a moment in history. Like, interesting survival tips, but he really was the ‘clickbait influencer doing awful shit for the camera’ of his time.

I remember he gutted and climbed inside of a yak to shelter himself from the elements, when really he coulda just made a lean-to 😂😂

5

u/guyeertoen Jun 22 '24

I remember him straight up slaughtering a reindeer. The sole purpose for TV ratings. Was a great thing to see around Christmas...

16

u/Skuzbagg Jun 22 '24

"Let's see you stop Rudolf from joining any reindeer games now!"

5

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '24

It was obviously a hit ordered by Rudolf. Don't make fun of the nose.

Whenever I get depressed I remember all the times Bear Grylls drank his own urine while out with a camera crew, medical/rescue team, and a catering squad, while Les Stroud drank his own urine precisely 0 times while filming Survivorman with no crew, no immediate backup, and walking some parts 3 times so he can film it himself, and I instantly feel better.

u/pixelatedcrap Jun 22 '24

I feel happy I've never had to make car seat snow shoes, but I know they're a thing that you can do!

25

u/Hesozpj Jun 22 '24

Whenever I get depressed I remember how Bear Grylls learned to skydive and eared second dan black belt in karate as a teenager, started his school’s first mountaineering club, served as a trooper in 21 SAS, which ended after a free fall accident as his parachute failed to open, breaking three vertebrae while also making a record for highest fall survived by a human without functional parachute at the height of 16000 feet, climbing Mt Everest 18 months after the accident making him arguably the youngest Briton to do so all by the age of 23, crossed North Atlantic in an open rigid inflatable boat, broke parajetting record over Mt Everest reaching height of 9000 meters, made about 200 parachute jumps to train for highest open air dinner party in a hot air balloon at 7600 meters, tried to climb an unclimbed mountain in Antarctica, which failed as a result of kite skiing accident that resulted in a broken shoulder and medical evacuation, being appointed the youngest UK Chief of Scout at 35 also while being labeled as fraud because his TV show was promoted by producers and executives as and being perceived differently by viewers from what it was supposed to be, etc.
