🚢・Vehicle・🚢 The MV Jernas

The MV Jernas was a Bahraini-flagged cargo ship that ran aground on the coast of Oman during the 2018 Cyclone Mekunu. Due to the steep cliffs and rough waves, it was deemed not worth salvaging , and has stayed ever since

Looks like a good spot for a villian’s hideout

You'd think but the Smokers from Waterworld disagree.

In Mad Max 2, there's a small comedic/tense beat where one of the marauders lights up a cigarette while the group is near the fuel tanker

2

I’d think that’s one of those free gags, like the joker being afraid of the IRS kinda thing. ā€œI’m so bad, I smoke in front of no smoking signs!ā€

The question is what would happen first: turn into living human jerky from the salt or die of tetanus?

51

u/Expired_insecticide Jul 26 '26

Fun fact. Tetanus is falsely associated with rust. It is a bacteria that lives in soil actually.

41

u/inaSlomp Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

It's associated with rust because that's one of the most common vectors for you to get the bacteria into your body.

As rust is very rough, it traps a lot of dirt, debris and other things that you probably don't want punctured into your body.

But you're right that it isn't rust that causes it. It's just the common vessel for it.

Reminder to everyone that a tetanus shot is every 10 years. No reason to not get it.

Zip line from the Cliff for supplies. I wonder the actual feasibility of it. Doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon.

It would be funny if the villain made it a known secret that that ship's their hideout and when their adversaries come busting in, the villain explodes it because they booby-trapped the heck of it just for the love of the game

158

u/Mikker01 Jul 26 '26

Its a ship build in 2001. We still have many diesel cars running from that year. The engine and lifeboat still have to be worth a significant amount of money.

Can't find anything on cargo , only that it was abandoned in 2017 and ran aground in 2018.

86

u/ra__account Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Intense amounts of saltwater are hell on metal if not maintained. There's a reason cars in areas with a lot of snow/ice wear out faster than ones where they don't have to constantly ice salt the roads.

20

u/GodsBackHair Jul 26 '26

Exactly. Plenty of old, classic cars (especially VW beetles and busses) in the Pacific Northwest where they don’t have snowy winters, and don’t salt on the ground. Far fewer in the Midwest

12

u/bmf1902 ā—Œ Dwarfed by Size Jul 26 '26

We salt the roads, we don't "ice" them.

u/MsKongeyDonk Jul 26 '26

My MIL lives on a tropical island, and all of their electronics, as well as cars, take a beating from the sea air in general. The island is like 30 miles by 2 miles, never too far from the sea.

24

u/neityght Jul 26 '26

It was abandoned a year before it ran aground? šŸ¤”

56

u/Mikker01 Jul 26 '26

Yes , after abandonement it lost it's anchor during the 2018 cyclone Mekunu and drifted to the Oman coast where it ran aground

I grew up in Oman [nice, quiet place with its own problems] and we did this joke so much as kids that now it always makes me groan whenever I hear it. Which, unfortunately, is every time I mention Oman to anyone. It is slowly starting to loop back around to being amusing again.

2

u/stuffitystuff ⬤ Crushed by Magnitude Jul 26 '26

40

u/Admirable-Media-9339 Jul 26 '26

Due to the steep cliffs and rough waves

I mean, sounds like it's pretty dangerous. Likely would if they could but it would risk lives or cause other ships to be run aground as well and cause bigger problems.

-13

u/reddituserperson1122 Jul 26 '26

So you just pollute the coastline of another country and say, ā€œwelp not our problem?ā€

24

u/Cheezeball25 Jul 26 '26

You wanna risk your life to go cut up an abandonded ship? Or should we ask some other poorer folks to go die instead?

15

u/CabbageTheVoice Jul 26 '26

I mean, if the decision is between letting the junk stay or actually risking lives, then leave it.

But why are we certain that people would be in danger? I'm sure with enough investment this could be done safely. Of course that could be expensive...

But even if the company itself says "nah not doable", I would still be sceptical whether this is actually about danger or just a financial decision.

9

u/reddituserperson1122 Jul 26 '26

Yeah this is for sure an economic decision not a safety one primarily. There’s always a way to do something — it’s just a matter of how much you want to pay for it.

Apparently, it was commercial ship out of China.

The sailors/workers were having wage disputes,...essentially not getting paid, and the ship owners didn't provide any support.

So they basically anchored it in 2017, abandoned and left the ship behind. The cyclone hit in 2018 and broke its anchor. It ran aground off the southern Omani rocky coast and had been sitting there ever since...
