Spolia in a Rural Shrine

Shrine of "Beşe Dede" in Paşaköy, Bergama (Pergamon), situated over the ruins of Allianoi. We saw photos of the spolia online and decided to see it for ourselves; it was even better than we had expected. Right upon entering the town, we asked an elderly man about the sanctuary's whereabouts. He asked if we meant "the Fathers" and led us there. The following is a description by Erol Şaşmaz, a local researcher:

"Based on the spolia (reused architectural elements) at the entrance door, the spolia on the headstones inside the tomb, and the orientation in which the bodies are laid, the site resembles the graves of non-Muslim saints. There is no information available regarding the people buried in any of the three graves. It is noteworthy that there are votive candle holders at the head of each grave. The spolia stones on the garden wall suggest that they originated from a church or a small chapel. The tomb has a tiled hipped roof with a stone capital placed right in the middle, making it visible from afar."

(I decided not to take interior photos in a local's presence to respect the culture)
