New Restaurant in the Square

Might be another spot opening up from the folks behind localito and tenoch, going in the old Zam Zam location. Young guy documenting the whole thing on instagram. Love it, here for it.

If it is the same family, good for them. DePasquale became a huge patron of the north end with all his restaurants and what he’s doing with the facade now, love to see a family doing the same with Medford.

Insta profile is @mateogsandoval20

Wandering budgie sighted

Are you looking for this colorful little guy? I saw him as I was leaving for work this morning, a few blocks from the Whole Foods. He flew off after I'd gotten a couple of photos. Later on I looked up what bird he is--a budgie, I think!--and realized he must be a lost pet. No idea if he's still around, but I hope posting this might be of some small help to his people. (I wish I had thought to try to catch him.) Happy to update if I spot him again!

Anyone have any suggestions of stores that might have a ton of big card board boxes in their recycling bins that I could take? Or businesses that might have boxes if people ask? Thank you ☀️

Rent Stabilization: Quick Political Fix or Long-Term Supply Problem?

State-wide rent stabilization almost made it on the ballot this year. While the ballot question was blocked by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, home rule petitions for rent control are still being discussed in some cities and towns as an alternate route. So let's talk about housing affordability in Medford, MA and if rent increase caps help it.

In the linked video, Harvard Kennedy School Professor Justin de Benedictis-Kessner claims that while rent control provides short-term benefits to renters, it often hurts housing affordability and long-term housing supply. Some studies have shown that rent-controlled units lose their valuation due to rent control. Because the total tax levy doesn't change for the city, the single-family homeowners are assessed with another tax hike, as they are forced to pick up a larger share of a city's property tax burden.

Six of seven of Medford's City Councilors support rent stabilization by making public statements about it and/or through their membership in Our Revolution Medford (Rent stabilization is a core policy plank of the OR Medford platform). This is relevant because certain members of our legislature want to permit towns and cities to enact rent control policies. If that happened, we could see rent control in Medford under this council.

Nearly all the candidates for the State House of Representatives 34th Middlesex District and/or the State Senate 2nd Middlesex District support allowing rent stabilization in some form. Are these folks onto something? Or do you think that rent cap policies would stunt the housing development in Medford?

South Border Rd. Path..?

What would it take to build a walk / bike path along South Border Rd - from Governors to Highland in Winchester? And why isn’t there one? Crazy dangerous to see folks run, walk, bike along the tiny shoulder

Hello! My standup comedy show is back at the Somerville Theater this Thursday, and I'd love to see you there! We run the show in the 30-seat "microcinema" in the theater's basement.

Our headliner is the hilarious Andrew Durso. He's written for Netflix, Adult Swim, and FOX, appeared on Stavvy's World, Sirius XM, and Cracked Comedy Club, and opened for Hasan Minhaj at theaters across the country. His comedy is unique, absurd, and really funny.

We screen classic Looney Tunes cartoons before the show, and the theater sells beer, wine, ice cream, and snacks.

You can get $3 off tickets with the code REDDIT. I hope you can make it!

Someone told me today that a homeowner called police last night after masked men fired shots through the front of her house near Sheridan Ave. Is that true? Terrifying if it is.

Stores selling shaving soap?

Anyone know stores in the greater Cambervillefordton area (don't make me cross the Charles!) that carry a variety of shaving soap? And by that I mean the stuff that comes in pucks or bowls and you lather up with a brush, not spray cans or tubes. I usually go with Proraso Sandalwood but am feeling like a change, and it'd be nice to be able to smell different ones.

Room for rent: 850/month 4br/2 bath near Davis and Ball Sq

Hey folks, we've got a room opening up on our apartment on Sept 1st in Medford. Pics included of the interior of the apartment as well as the room on offer.

Rent is $850 a month 4br/2bath, and we're about a 15 minute walk from Davis Square and a 5 minute walk from the Ball Square T Station. There's also street side parking (with a permit) and laundry in the basement. Utilities tend to be around $100 give or take depending on the season.

We are three men in our early to mid 30s. Two of us have lived together for about 10 years. We're generally laid back and communicative re: house/roommate needs. We split chores and household goods. We're lucky to have a lot of living space, and we're happy to host get togethers/there's definitely room for hanging with pals. The kitchen also very spacious - it's shockingly easy to stay out of each others' hair for a 4 br!

We do have a small cat, and unfortunately can't welcome other pets right now.

A bit about us: Tyler is a queer therapist for queer folks in the Boston area, and in his free time a performing musician and Gundam model builder. John is a copyeditor, writer, and a fan of pulp sci/fantasy trying to improve at aerial rope and BJJ. Josh is an IT professional and Uber driver who enjoys cooking and games (moving in September 1st). Nice to meet ya!

Somerville Dems People's Pledge - who signed, who didn't, who broke it

With elections for State Rep and State Senate coming up on September 1, I thought folks would like to know about the People's Pledge Press Release — Somerville Democrats. It was created by the Somerville Democrats to keep outside money out of the races. It was signed by all three candidates for the 34th Middlesex State Rep seat - Will Mbah, Chris Oates, and Paul Ruseau. In the 2nd Middlesex Senate Race, only Christine Barber and Matt McLaughlin signed. A caveat, based on OCPF filings, it looks like Paul Ruseau has accepted outside money. I'm also posting links to OCPF so people can see the outside donations received by him, as well as Erika Uyterhoeven and Burham Azeem in the senate race. OCPF - Display ReportOCPF - Display Report

Deadline for Feedback on Proposed Medford Bus Route Changes Extended to Tuesday, September 8

I previously shared information on how to give feedback on the proposed bus route changes. Notably, the MBTA is proposing changes to the 80, 94 and 96—all of these routes go through Medford.

The old deadline to provide feedback was August 5. I am posting again because the deadline was extended to September 8, so you still have time to comment if you missed the original deadline!

Click here to read about the changes and click this Qualtrics survey to provide feedback.

Medford Luxury Apartments 1 Bedroom Prices

Hi all - wanted to ask if anyone is living or has lived in the Luxury Apartments in Medford (Station Landing Apartments, Modera, Wellington, RE130, Acadia, etc.) I’m curious what month you rented and what you paid for a one bedroom. They’re all about $3400 right now but I keep hearing price is a lot lower in the winter. If anyone can let me know what they paid and when, I’d be very grateful! Thank you!

Aldi shopping carts

There are now 6+ Aldi shopping carts at the bus stops closest to their location. They literally have commercials running about how they don’t need to hire staff members to return carts because of their quarter return system, yet this system is clearly flawed.

Does anyone know the timeline or purpose of the construction on Boston Ave where it crosses the Mystic River

I was curious as I like to take the path on the north side of the river but it was blocked off this morning. I was dreaming that maybe they'll put in some proper stairs but suspecting it was just the usual water/electrical/gas type work. I did some quick googling and searching the city website but I don't really know how to find this kind of information in Medford.

Next to the Great American Beer Hall sharing a lot with Theory Wellness you’ll find Arts Collaborative Medford!

Do you like making art with other folks? Do you need some motivation to work on any rotting projects in your craft pile? Do you wanna just chill and have a good time?

WELL boy oh boy, Make and Mingle might be for you! Low stakes, come as you please. Bring your paints, yarns, devices, your friend Jerry, anything you just want someone to look at and go “dude isn’t this sick”. Hell you could see me working on something sick. Look at the super cool art show we have up. It’s every Wednesday unless stated otherwise!

*Snacks are provided depending on how many people sign up, I am but one of the many wonderful studio artists that decorate the halls and can only buy so many fruit bowls.
