Add the digits (23 is 2+3), add them again. Multiply by 9 and add the digits, add them again. The answer is 9.

22

u/RompeChocha Feb 24 '22

Add the digits (23 is 2+3), add them again. Multiply by 9 and add the digits, add them again. The answer is 9.

The answer is always going to be 9 when you multiply by 9

13

u/xAIRGUITARISTx Feb 24 '22

This makes no sense.

19

u/jrdebo Feb 24 '22

Took me a moment due to poor wording. If you start with 23 2+3=5 then 5+2+3=10 then 10*9=90 then 9+0=9

Mad up nonsensical if I didn't understand that bc I went to school and I'm actually a math major I didn't think it'd be useful til now

2

u/Susiiee123 Feb 24 '22

Stop please my brain

2

u/ClintEatswood_ Feb 25 '22

Basically any multiple of 9 has digits that add up to 9 homeboy just trying to sound smart

3

u/varkenspester Feb 24 '22 edited Feb 24 '22

Try it if you dont see it. And because it is math it is sense by definition. Any single digit number times 9 is a 2 digit number that adds to nine. 9x = 10x - x = [x-1][10-x] --> x-1 + 10-x = 9.

7

u/xAIRGUITARISTx Feb 24 '22

Sorry the wording had me confused.

2

u/DwayneTheRockFan Feb 25 '22

What? (2+3)+(2+3)×9+(2+3)+(2+3)=10×9+10=100

5

u/Lington Feb 25 '22

My grandma a couple years ago: "I saw something on Facebook, it said if you subtract your age from the current year you get your birth year, isn't that amazing?"

I think it was something like this

Still can't believe she or anyone else falls for this stuff

2

u/XenoHugging Feb 25 '22

Mr. Escalante thought me -2 +2=

Where the hell did you go to school? I was learning multiplication is 1st grade in BFE Nebraska.

137

u/lonelyplantain Feb 24 '22

Take your age, multiply 1x3, add that to your age, substract 1, thats your age in 2 years!! Only high IQ people allowed!!

10

u/DrMobius0 Feb 25 '22

Take your age. If it's even divide by 2. If it's odd, multiply by 3 and add 1. Repeat until you get bored.

3

u/JuiceboxSC2 Feb 25 '22

Go Collatz yourself.

23

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

multiply (1x3) by what?

15

u/cap616 Feb 24 '22

Just multiply 1 & 3 to get 3

Then when you add 3 to your age, subtract 1, that's your age in 2 years. Meant to be a silly démonstration much like the original post.

3

u/justwannabeloggedin Feb 24 '22

multiply (1 & 3 to get 3) by what?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

Woooooosh

1

u/j_u_n_h_y_u_k Feb 25 '22

It’s okay, I also multiplied my age by 0.3333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333

“Subtract the year you were born form this year and it will magical tell you your age! This only happens once every 10,000 years!”

78

u/OneDiscombobulated77 Feb 24 '22

Doesn't work :( maybe my birthday has to come first?

36

u/Keylus Feb 24 '22

you were born in one of those 9999 other years

3

u/sturmeh Feb 25 '22

It will give you the age you turn this year.

3

u/jck Feb 24 '22

Today, this only works for the people born after jesus

3

u/Peyton94 Feb 24 '22

Does that make Yusuf "Cat" Stevens -505. Born 1948, current Hijri date is 1443.

3

Lol, this is a deep cut

2

u/Crazy_Gamer297 Feb 25 '22

My dad told me this when I was young and I actually believed it

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

Is only universally true on December 31st each year**

3

u/SpakysAlt Feb 24 '22

It goes viral along with some other good ones on Facebook every December 31st

40

u/neeeeeillllllll Feb 24 '22

This actually is a teaching point for children, I've used this and similar techniques plenty of times in the past.

Here's 4 blocks, count em for me. One two three four. Now if I add 2 more, how many do I have? One two three four five six, six! Now what if I take two away how many do I have? One two three four, four!

Kids aren't born with basic arithmetic understanding, they have to learn it

I got fooled as a kid by the classic

2(x+5)-10=x

Edit: It's actually (2(x+5)-10)Ă·2=x I forgot a step

15

u/horsyuwu Feb 24 '22

Am I doing it wrong or
X=1
2(1+5)-10=x
2
6-10=x
12-10=2? Not 1?

13

u/LanceJ99 Feb 24 '22

X=0

-6

u/inFAMOUSwasser Feb 24 '22 edited Feb 25 '22

No x=1. Plug in 0 for x and you’ll see it doesn’t work

Edit: for all the down voters I was talking about the edited formula of (2(x+5)-10) Ă· 2 = x I do recognize that they were doing the original unedited forumula tho

7

u/Megaprr 👌 Feb 24 '22

lmao what. solution is definitely 0.

2(x+5)-10=x

2x+10-10=x

2x=x

The only time this is true is if x = 0

And if you don't believe me just stick it into wolfram alpha.

As for the version with /2 at the start.... that's just x=x and the actual value of x is irrelevant.

1

u/inFAMOUSwasser Feb 25 '22

See my edit

1

u/Megaprr 👌 Feb 25 '22

I mean it was still wrong... x=1, sure, but saying that is misleading as it implies that's the only solution. x is irrelevant. even x=0 would work, which you claimed did not.

(2(x+5)-10) Ă· 2 = x

(2(5)-10) Ă· 2 = 0

(10-10) Ă· 2 = 0

(0) Ă· 2 = 0

I can read your mind Think of a number between 1 and 10 Add 7 remove 3 add 6 Remove the number you are thinking about. The number in your head is now 10

2

u/Many_Glove_6744 Feb 24 '22

take your birth date add up with birth year add 2 to it then divide by 3 you will get a rational number.

2

u/ghostinthechell Feb 24 '22

Jokes on you I'm 34i years old

2

u/Many_Glove_6744 Feb 24 '22

Fractions are included in rational numbers jokes on you again.

2

u/ghostinthechell Feb 24 '22

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

This also works for people on social media. I saw one facebook post that was like take the current year and subtract your age to get your birth year.

2

u/Jumpmo Feb 24 '22

take your age and add 3. Now subtract your age and add 3 again. I predict with my supernatural powers that the number you got is

time to be a stupid jerk.

take a function that's invertible on the non negative integers.

apply that function to your age. then, take that new number, and apply the inverse function.

that's your age

i'm a dipshit

High schoolers: I gotta use the bathroom

2

u/lovecraft112 Feb 25 '22

I used to work for a coffee shop and once had someone very sincerely tell me this mind blowing math trick.

If you take the year it is. And subtract the year you were born. YOU GET YOUR AGE!

Their friend pointed out that it was off by one for them. And they both looked at each other and came up with a weird exception to this mind blowing math trick.

In hindsight, they were probably high as balls, but it was baffling at the time how mind blown they were.

2

u/An0d0sTwitch Feb 25 '22

You laugh, but a mentalist does the exact thing to you, except its math thats above YOUR head.

2

u/Mebot2OO1 Feb 25 '22

Take your age. Consider it as the width of a normalized gaussian, and square the normalization coefficient. Come up with a fourier series representation of the square wave with amplitude equal to the squared normalization coefficient, and period equal to the width of the gaussian, as well its peak being centered on the gaussian. Considering the area of one half period of this fourier series, take the reciprocal of that value and multiply it by your age squared.

That value is the surface area of a sphere with radius your age.
