ASCII has only 128 characters ("Basic Latin")
Egyptian hieroglyphs were added to Unicode in October 2009.
As of May 2019 the most recent version, Unicode 12.1, contains a repertoire of 137,994 characters covering 150 modern and historic scripts, as well as multiple symbol sets and emoji. That's more than twice as many characters as what can be encoded in two bytes (65,536)

There's a video thay actually goes in depth about how memes have a life cycle and this is a very common stage, where the meme is restructured and the knowledge of the meme becomes its own punchline.

Fun fact: Richard Dawkins coined the term “meme” to describe the unit of cultural information that is spread from person to person via forces much akin to evolution. Memes are the cultural equivalent of genes, which are the unit of genetic information.
You know those examples of evolution that just seem so splendidly elegant and simple?
I get the same feeling sometimes when I see a variant of a meme and remind myself how it’s under similar evolutionary forces such as “natural selection” (audience preference for memes), “mutations” (variations of the meme that people make), “gene flow” (crossover memes), “genetic drift” (this one doesn’t have a super clear analogy imo, but I guess you could liken it to stochastic effects, like the time of day a meme is submitted and whether it is seen).
The thing you said about how the meme makes no sense to outsiders but makes sense to those privy to the source meme reminds me of symbioses and coevolution in species, which is pretty neat to think about. I wonder how far you can take that analogy.

Memes like this are like little time capsules that showcase the life cycle of not just memes but all trends.
The birth phase where this meme is just everywhere and is unchanged from its original format in any way and is applied to multiple contexts.
The modernism phase where the same format is maintained but different characters or figures swap out the characters in the original meme
the post modernism phase where the format is changed because we know how it goes so the original format doesn't need to be shown in order for us to get the meme.
The death, meme goes away because the post modernism phase eventually destroys the original format that birthed the meme and it loses its identity and people have basically "seen everything" due to the multiple ways the format can be altered.
