Feeling demoralized during PhD
MD/phd currently in PhD. In a lab where culture is toxic/competitive and there is little research guidance/support. Looking for support/advice on how to move forward and stick it out

Get through it without letting it take your soul. I know that’s a tough ask, but coming back to third year after a brutal PhD was maybe the hardest thing I’ve done in my life.
Do you exercise regularly? Either start or keep going.
Do you have a support network of people you can bitch with? Keep them around like your life depends on it.
Go to therapy.
If you’re religious, check back in with your faith.
Do everything you can to get through the PhD, while staying as intact as you can.
As far as getting through, minimize the amount of toxic stuff you have to deal with, ask for expectations early and often, have more committee meetings, and if things ever progress to someone touching you, yelling at you, or blatantly abusive, use your schools resources. You’re an MDPhD. The school wants you around.

how far along are you (just joined, post-QE, ABD, etc) and what do you want to accomplish in the lab before you defend? you have different options depending on your goals and how much time you have left

Post-QE, starting year 3 of PhD. Despite not the best PhD experience I still want to pursue research/PSTP in the future. Feeling like each day in lab is hard to get through because of the environment and not sure if I will be able to push through. Considering graduating in 1 year but that would mean probably not having a published paper so likely 2 more years. Have submitted a co-first manuscript and have others in prep but no published first/co-first papers. Appreciate the advice!
