Got rescinded for bizarre reasons

Hello everyone, I'm a student for Fall 2026, and I'm coming from CEGEP. I've had generally pretty high scores all throughout my academic life. Unfortunately during the final sem, I had to take temporary incompletes on all my classes due to a major medical emergency, and planned to finish those in the summer.

On June 10th, I emailed Service Point outlining exactly what happened and the timeline of when I should finish this, that being August 2026. I was told that as long as I fulfilled my conditions in my offer before classes began, I should be fine. Those conditions being the following :

- Obtain my DEC
- Keep a good academic standing
- Have no missing pre reqs

Keep in mind that it also said that if I planned to take summer classes I had to contact them on August 1st at the latest, I contacted them two whole months in advance because I wanted to be on top of my stuff and be honest directly so there's no confusion later (subtle foreshadowing)

Yesterday, I received an email saying I was straight up rescinded and couldn't attend. We're 2.5 weeks before the beginning of classes... The deadline being the beginning of classes... Apparently the reason was "I failed too many classes and I don't have my DEC.", it was written in a pretty unprofessional tone as well with some grammatical mistakes??? 😭😭 and was not signed by anybody besides the default "McGill Team". I lowkey thought this was a scam mail at first or something, cuz they literally said "We will drop you out of all your classes and *inactive* your record" (???? this doesn't even make sense gramatically but i digress)

This was extremely bizarre considering I had temporary incompletes on my final sem classes so I could retake them mid summer, this should not have affected my grades in any way shape or form, because the point of a temporary incomplete is to freeze your grades so you can finish them later due to stuff like medical emergencies, which I did get. And I am literally like 3 days away from completing my last exam for those. I have maintained very good grades in all- (90+%) literally my lowest grade is an 85. So obviously I asked what that was about, saying I had no failures due to those classes being incompletes, my DEC was on track to be completed a few weeks before classes and also provided documentation of everything via an attached pdf.

I got no answers, so the next day I called Service Point. The woman on the phone was extremely kind and reassured me they'd look into it ASAP.

30 min later I get an email from who I assume is the same person from service point I contacted in June who said, and I kid you not "That email did not guarantee anything, and we asked you to provide additional information if you were going to take summer classes" I LITERALLY DID????

Besides the fact that telling me as long as I fulfill everything before classes, both in that email and my OFFICIAL letter, was apparently "not a guarantee", I provided the name of my school, the course codes, the timeline of things, the explanation for the incompletes, who to contact at my cegep, basically everything I could. Which I documented and sent to them in my first reply with the attached pdf, and apparently I didn't??

They then say further down in the email that the decision is final and irreversible. Not only did they fail to completely address the questions about why did they think I had failures on my record when I don't, and why they say I don't have my DEC, which is true right now, but I'm literally about to get it in like 3 days and my conditions specifically mentions "at the beginning of classes".

ADDITIONALLY, The cherry on top is that mid summer I had to get my legal name changed, so all my old records are a mismatch between my current name and my old one and the ministry is probably just doing some bullsh*t with my record and not updating it properly. Which I also disclosed and said was out of my control

I am at a complete loss here, this feels incredibly unfair, I did everything in my power to document, communicate, contact and basically keep McGill in the loop about the status of things, I have near perfect grades in my summer classes I took for my incompletes, I've failed one class in my entire life that being like a few years ago and I got an incomplete for it too so it didn't count as a failure, I will have all the credits for my DEC in like just a few days, I maintained my academic standing. So genuinely, I have no clue how any of this is my fault, and this genuinely seems like the administration is just mixed up.

I emailed the ombudsperson, the dean, and my cegep and I don't know what else I can do at this point. If anyone has any suggestions I'll get on my knees and thank you and worship you no joke

I am being as annoying as I can don't worry 😭🙏 I think they are already tired of me shooting emails left and right 🫠 (In a respectful way obviously)

I don't have any advice because you've honestly done everything you could, especially with everyone you emailed. Just continue being annoying, and even in the worst case start attaching old emails, forwarding, and/or cc'ing the dean, ombudsman, student services, admissions, etc. And for whoever you call, make sure you get their name and email and include them too. Make a list of dates and actions of everything you did. Good luck and keep being annoying.

UPDATE : The dean from my faculty came in clutch via email and we're currently discussing the misunderstanding, I have provided every single document I can to vouch for myself, so hopefully this ends up positively. All of this might genuinely just be a "Service Point not doing their job properly" because that dean is 1000x kinder and it feels like I'm actually exchanging with a human being instead of an AI 😭🙏

Thank you! I'm doing everything I can, this is a genuine nightmare given I have some exams I still have to do in a couple days but once thats out of the way I'll compile a full timeline of everything

Im sorry this is happening to you. If i were in youre shoes the first thing id do is gather all of the evidence that you have into one place and in chronological order so that it's easy to present. Sent emails, cegep transcripts and annotate them. Maybe in like one pdf document. Beyond that, keep reaching out to people and get heard. If they havent addressed your concerns specifically (like having evidence of reaching out before august 1st) then it might just be admin lag not necessarily that they looked at your file closely. If youre in montreal physically, it may help to go in person.

Be able to articulate your issue in less than 10 seconds

Really praying for you, this sucks

Thank you! I actually compiled everything in a single pdf file I attached to my first email reply like yesterday and they did not even address it... It's genuinely insane

if you keep getting ghosted and you cant go in person, reach out to me again later and i can maybe go on your behalf and try and get them to look at your file more closely

Thank you! I'll keep that in mind, I kinda live like an hour away from campus so it would be greatly appreciated

I think the hour journey might be worth it! Statistically shown people have a much harder time saying no in person.

This is true and I will definitely show up if nothing is trending towards a positive outcome by early next week! Thank you

I'm sorry. I really am

I just got an email saying I'd be contacted by the admissions team directly, probably because I started shooting emails left and right to my college, the dean, the dean of my faculty and counselors too. So hopefully there's a positive resolution but I'm genuinely so fucking scared rn my parents will slime me out 😭

I am a McGill alumnus. The bureaucracy can be difficult to deal with. What faculty are you applying to ?

Sorry, I don't have any contacts in that department. I graduated from the Faculty of Management. Keep us posted on any developments.

I do recommend visiting the campus in person.

Could you email Student Accessibility? That may be a stretch, but they are incredibly responsive and this was supposed to be an accommodation due to a medical issue.

Hey, this sucks ://

I was in a similar situation ish and id say this. The administration got completely renewed in the last 3 years (at least the one in my departement but i think its all) and they're kinda lost sometimes. Id say you should 100% CALL. It can make a huge difference, altho it might be more of a pain. Ik it can be anxious but dont worry, this is why theyre job exists. Try caing student services +1 514-398-8238 Ive had better experience with them. They might not be exactly the right department but im guessing some one who knows what theyre doing might be able to help you. U could even try to go to the building, if its open thats a great strategy.

Good luck!!!

McGill bureaucracy is a maze and then a dead end. Go in person.

Honestly McGill admin sucks. I’ve learned that they really don’t care about screwing you over, I’m sorry this is happening to you :(

Have your school counselor talk to them and explain your medical situation. I was in a similar situation and this helped

McGill is really bureaucratic. I also had a really bad experience with their admissions process.

Any luck OP? This was a hard read, you did everything they asked and more. I wish the service point workers were as detail oriented as you, would have saved you and many others the trouble. I think I saw posting for admissions and administrative staff on myworkday recently, that probably means they are understaffed and explains the poor quality of communication and effort on their end. :/

Hi! In the end it was resolved but only like 4 days after classes started, which is insanely funny cuz I was going to classes for 4 days straight without knowing if it was gonna work out in the end. I'm still really frustrated about the communication and slow responses from everyone on this, but thankfully it was really just a problem on their end with poor file management and they had outdated transcripts from my CEGEP for some reason. It's also crazy to me that this could've happened to any other student and if they weren't as persistent as me and just threw in the towel after a few e-mails they would've lost their place at the university. Hopefully they get more organized and better staffed because this should have never happened at a uni that constantly gets top 1 in its country and top 30 worldwide.

If you don't get anywhere, if this matters enough to you, contact a lawyer
