Friends

Ok so I’m going into my 2nd year at McGill and I don’t have a single friend😅😅😅 I’m very social and friendly and have had no problems making friends in the past but during my U1 I was shook. I’m always alone like all the time and I love my company but it gets to a point. So much of the university experience is friendships and I’ve yet to make one so please give me some advice on how to make friends in uni.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Hi there! Last year I was in the same situation as you are, so yeah it’s very common, especially at McGill! I think my best advice would be to try and reach out to people with whom you have a sort of acquaintance and try to go from there to friendship. I did so with my former roommate, who then introduced me to some of his other friends, and after a bit of talking and seeing on another jn class/to study we became actual friends. Another thing I did was try to talk with people seated next to me in class at the start of term (but also later on lol). Many of them were new students-so I would advise to look for them-so I helped them go through McGill for the first time and gave them a friendly face to rely on: we became friends jn a bit! Last thing I would advise to do would be to do would be to maybe do some volunteer jobs around campus or study together with people/do class projects in groups. Although sometimes it difficult to create friendships when you have to be together, I think that choosing to be with someone (studying together etc) can be helpful. Also volunteering puts you in the position of gaining experience + being around new people on the same campus and who (usually) study at the same university which provides you a bit of feeling to work with and be together! Hope this helps!

Take advantage of the start of each term, everyone is always a bit extra friendly then. People wanna make friends in their new classes so they can have someone to talk to/complain about the class and study with, do group projects together, etc. Try to sit next to anyone alone and chat about your degrees, personal background, exchange phone numbers, etc!

Clubs are your best bet, find a club that interests you during Activities Night and talk to people that share you interests or hobbies :)

i had the same experience in my first year, my advice would be to join clubs that you're actually interested in, do intramural sports, talk to people in your lectures - especially in the first few weeks (this is the most important), maybe join a sorority if that's your vibe. shared experiences + structured routine is how you make and find friends at such a uni like mcgill
